Registered Nurse (RN) – Med-Surg – Allen Hospital – PRN Position.
Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of PositionThe Registered Nurse Medical/Surgical functions as a care provider on a multidisciplinary care team responsible for delivering patient care through the nursing process of assessment, diagnosing, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The RN demonstrates knowledge of patient age and cultural diversity, effective time management and prioritization, contributes to quality nursing care through performance improvement initiatives, collaborates with other professional disciplines, and supports the mission of the ministry to provide physical and psychological support to patients and families.
EssentialJob Functions
- In collaboration with interdisciplinary teams, establish goals and strategies for meeting discharge or continuing care needs with the patient.
- Perform and document complete patient assessments, initiate and maintain current nursing care plans for all assigned patients, identify patient learning needs for individualized teaching.
- Administer medications in a safe manner consistent with the State of Practice and Bon Secours Mercy Health policies and procedures.
- Serve as a point of contact for patients care coordination across hospital departments.
- Act as a patient safety advocate by participating in ongoing quality improvement in the department.
- Serve as a patient advocate in collaboration with spiritual care, palliative care, and ethics.

Licensing/Certification- Current RN license in the state they are working or covered by a compact (required)
- BLS Basic Life Support (preferred upon hire; must obtain from approved source prior to direct patient care; ACLS acceptable in lieu of BLS)
- Med-Surgical Nursing Certification RN-BC (preferred)
- CCRN Critical Care Registered Nurse (preferred)
- PCCN Progressive Care Certified Nurse (preferred)
- CMSRN Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (preferred)
- NIH Stroke Certification (preferred)
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (preferred)
Experience- One year of RN experience (required)
- Six months RN experience in an acute care hospital setting (preferred)
- Assigns patient care according to nursing skill, knowledge, and scope of practice of staff.
- Orients, facilitates learning experiences, and provides education to nursing staff and others.
- Possesses clinical knowledge and skills to provide evidence-based patient care per current standards of practice and policy.
- Performs comprehensive assessment of patient’s clinical condition and psychosocial needs.
- Safely and efficiently develops, implements, and prioritizes plan of care.
- Applies the nursing process in patient care delivery.
- Assesses physical and emotional responses to treatment to evaluate effectiveness and revise the plan of care as needed.
- Assists patient and family in coping with illness.
- Collaborates with others for coordinated patient care.
- Strong interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills.
- Applies cultural diversity and inclusion principles in care.
- Recognizes own limitations and seeks assistance to perform safely.
- Advances personal and professional growth through education and professional development.
