Detention Deputy
This is a responsible position involving the custody, control and care of inmates within an adult detention facility, and the movement of inmates within and outside the facility. A Detention Deputy may work in any unit in the jail. Their specific job functions are listed in the respective post order.
Duties include abiding by the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics, knowing and complying with Agency procedures, rules and regulations, and Florida State Statutes pertaining to county detention facilities, the Florida Model Jail Standards and accreditation standards. Responsibilities also include reception, custody, control and release of inmates, writing clear and accurate reports, maintaining order and discipline within the facility, being alert and security conscious to prevent escapes and contraband, searching visitors and inmates for contraband, inspecting living quarters and inmates for contraband, standing guard and taking required action in emergencies, taking personal charge of assigned inmates and supervising their activities, escorting and guarding inmates to and from hearings, trials, medical facilities, or other institutions or locations, supervising work details of prisoners, taking periodic counts of inmates, monitoring all inmate correspondence, supervising all inmate visitation periods, checking the facility for security deficiencies and needed maintenance, responding to emergencies in the jail, assisting in control of inmates when needed as backup, being alert for conditions or situations which inhibit efficient operation of the Agency or the Detention Bureau and making recommendations for solutions, performing any other duties that may be required by the Sheriff or through necessity of situations, attending training as required, and performing other related duties, as assigned, including modified schedule or temporary re-assignment during declared emergency or activations, as determined by the Sheriff.
Typical qualifications include being at least 18 years of age, having a high school diploma or GED, successfully completing Basic Detention Recruit School and the state exam in the State of Florida or receiving a certificate of comparative compliance from the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission, possessing a valid Florida Driver's License with a good driving record, being able to effectively communicate information both orally and in writing, analyzing situations quickly and objectively and determining a proper course of action, reacting quickly and calmly under emergency situations, coping with situations firmly, courteously and tactfully, with respect to rights of others, developing skill in use and care of firearms and less-than-lethal weapons, being in good physical and mental condition and successfully passing physical and psychological examinations, effectively communicating in the English language both verbally and in writing, following instructions and organizing own work, working harmoniously with Agency personnel and outside contacts, handling highly sensitive information without compromising confidentiality, possessing normal sight and hearing and physical agility required for standing, walking and climbing stairs, and being able to work with minimum supervision.
