Job Description

Serves as a resource for the clinical inquiry process, including identification of potential projects and subject matter expertise. Demonstrates a spirit of inquiry to support professional curiosity through research, evidence-based practice, and quality improvement initiatives using the organization’s preferred structure, i.e. PDSA (plan, do, study, act). Works with others to identify problems and solutions, collaborates to create and assist in implementing changes, and creates a supportive environment for nursing research, scientific inquiry, and quality improvement.

Disseminates evidence-based practice findings through educational programs, courses, and other activities. Other duties as assigned.

Creates, plans, implements, and coordinates orientation for individuals new to the nursing unit/department using the ANPD standards of practice, including assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation with the NPD Practice model. Adjusts implementation strategies based on the learner’s developmental level, learning needs, readiness, ability to learn, language, and cultural preferences. Engages learners in planned educational activities using effective facilitation skills.

Plans and coordinates training of new graduates, experienced nurses, and ancillary staff, ensuring relevant, evidence-based learning. Develops and coordinates education plans related to initial and ongoing competency validation, coaching, simulation, and tools capturing objective and subjective data. Utilizes clinical problems to promote inquiry, follows through with competency assessment, and creates a safe environment for assessment and observation of practice. Collects data to evaluate and refine competency management activities, role models competent practice, and facilitates a positive learning environment.

Performs needs assessment, gap analysis, and environmental scanning to identify high-risk practices. Designs engaging educational activities through adult learning principles, coordinates clinical practice and lifelong career development, integrates regulatory standards for continuing education hours, and collaborates with content experts and stakeholders to support interprofessional care. Assists students and practicing nurses in identifying learning needs, strengths, and opportunities, developing growth-oriented learning activities, and evaluates effectiveness of educational activities.

Supports the preceptor program, promotes certification and advanced formal education, collaborates with academic partners for student placement, and demonstrates caring behaviors, respect, equity, inclusiveness, and empathy in all interactions.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of word processing, data management, email, and presentation applications. [Required]
  • Effective professional communicator with strong interpersonal skills. [Required]
  • Knowledge of the American Nurses Association (ANA)/Association of Nursing Professional Development (ANPD) scope and standards for Nursing Professional Development. [Required]
  • Self-directed, creative, and demonstrates initiative to fulfill the seven roles of the NPD practitioner: learning facilitator, change agent, mentor, leader, champion for inquiry, advocate for the NPD specialty and partner for practice transitions. [Preferred]
  • Knowledge of applicable regulatory standards (e.g., CMS, OSHA) for professional specialty served. [Preferred]
Education
  • Bachelor's of Nursing. [Required]
Work Experience
  • 2+ years of nursing experience in a hospital setting. [Required]
  • Experience in PCU area. [Preferred]
  • Experience as preceptor/charge/educator. [Required]
Licenses and Certifications
  • Registered Nurse (RN). [Required]
  • Basic Life Support – CPR Certificate (BLS). [Required]
  • ANCC‑Nursing Professional Development Certification (ANCC‑NPD). [Preferred]
  • Acute/Critical Care Nursing – Adult (CCRN). [Preferred]
