Position Overview

The veterinary assistant provides support to the veterinarians and technicians in their daily tasks by assisting the doctors in the field with radiographing, medications, and medical procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist Veterinarians during farm calls, including handling and restraining horses safely and professionally.
  • Prepare, load, and maintain ambulatory equipment, supplies, and medications for daily routes.
  • Collect samples (blood, fecal, swabs) and perform basic in-field diagnostic as directed.
  • Support procedures such as lameness exams, injections, wound care and emergencies.
  • Prepare laboratory tests and assist with taking radiographs.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the hospital each day; clean equipment, and facilities using chemicals and supplies; ensure the safe use of chemicals; complete laundry
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions
  • Maintain accurate medical records, assist with billing and record keeping.
  • Show up for work regularly; full-time presence at work is essential for every shift.
  • Promote hospital products and services and support the organization
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Manager;
    May include assisting with office duties, ownerships, and billing.
Qualifications (Required)
  • Veterinary technician/assistant with customer service skills.
  • Certified Veterinary Assistant (CVA) / Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) preferred but not required.
  • Equine knowledge and handling required. Duties include frequent bending, kneeling, and walking with equipment.
  • Good time management skills, able to multi task, and work independently.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Knowledge of Thoroughbred horses.
  • Office duties, answering the phones, taking payments, processing health certificates for horses shipping, attaching lab results, DVM billing, processing labs, downloading radiographs and ultrasounds to the server.
  • Clean driving record and a valid driver's license.
  • Great communication skills, a positive "can-do" attitude, and a willingness to learn.

Schedule

Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:00 PM, with occasional early or late shifts as needed. Some weekends may be required. Must be flexible to meet the needs of the practice.
