Water Meter Shop Technician II
The Water Meter Shop Technician II is responsible for advanced installation, maintenance, testing, and repair of water meters in a shop environment. Building on the foundational skills of a Technician I, this position involves diagnosing complex issues, performing precision calibration, and ensuring the integrity of water measurement systems. The Technician II may also provide guidance to Technicians I and assist in training.
Report to Department Director or Designee.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Advanced Water Meter Testing: Conduct detailed testing and analysis of various water meters, including complex or large-diameter meters. Identify and troubleshoot issues related to meter accuracy, performance, and durability. Document and report test results, offering recommendations for repairs or replacements.
- Complex Maintenance and Repair: Perform in-depth disassembly, repair, and reassembly of a wide range of water meters, including mechanical and electronic types. Address advanced issues such as flow rate inconsistencies, mechanical wear, and electronic malfunctions. Conduct preventative maintenance to minimize meter failures and extend service life.
- Installation and Precision Calibration: Install and calibrate meters to precise standards, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. Assist in the installation and configuration of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and automated meter reading (AMR) systems. Verify calibration accuracy using specialized testing equipment.
- Inventory and Tool Management: Oversee inventory levels of parts and equipment, coordinating with suppliers to maintain adequate stock. Ensure that tools and testing equipment are properly maintained, calibrated, and in good working condition. Assist in the development of inventory management procedures and best practices.
- Data Entry and Reporting: Maintain accurate and detailed records of all testing, repairs, and installations performed. Generate reports for internal use and regulatory compliance, highlighting trends, recurring issues, and potential improvements. Use software and databases to track meter performance and service history.
- Safety and Compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols, including the proper use of PPE, handling of hazardous materials, and shop safety procedures. Ensure that all work complies with local, state, and federal regulations regarding water meter installation and maintenance.
- Training and Mentorship: Provide guidance, training, and support to Meter Shop Technicians I, assisting with complex tasks and troubleshooting. Participate in and sometimes lead training sessions for new technicians or on new equipment and procedures. Continuously update personal knowledge on the latest industry standards, technologies, and best practices.
- Customer Service and Communication: Interact with other departments and customers to provide technical assistance, resolve issues, and offer expert advice. Respond to complex customer inquiries related to water meter performance and accuracy. Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification in a related field is preferred.
- Minimum of 2 - 3 years of experience as a Technician I or equivalent experience in water meter operations.
- Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
- Must possess a valid Florida Commercial Driver's License learners permit before start date.
- Within six months of employment/promotion, must possess and maintain a valid Florida Commercial Driver's License, Class "B" with tanker endorsement and an acceptable driving record.
- Must possess a minimum "3" certification in Water Distribution.
- Must obtain a "2" certification in Water Distribution within 3 years of hire or promotion.
- Florida Commercial Driver's License, Class "B" with tanker endorsement and an acceptable driving record.
- D.E.P. Level 2 Water Distribution certification.
- Must reside within 45 minutes of City Hall (110 SE Watula Avenue) using Map Quest.
