Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Job Summary
The Mechanic diagnoses and repairs diesel tractors, trailers and other wheeled vehicles by performing the following duties.
Job Responsibilities- Examines and diagnoses vehicle problems, and repairs according to generally accepted methods
- Discusses extensive or difficult in-depth repairs with Terminal Manager and/or Supervisor
- Demonstrates and enforces CEMEX safety policies and regulations to all mechanics (e.g., lockout-tagout policies, hazard assessment)
- Ensures shop and all repairs comply with OSHA regulations
- Performs routine scheduled maintenance outlined on PM checklist sheets
- Plans all routine work procedures
- Raises vehicle, with hydraulic jack or hoist, to gain access to mechanical components for removal, repair or inspection
- Removes components for repair or replacement such as alternators, starters, water pumps, radiators, condensers, compressors, clutches, transmissions, differentials, wheel assemblies, brakes, drive lines, gearboxes, pumps, rollers, etc.
- Disassembles components, inspects parts for wear, and determines cause of failure
- Troubleshoots and repairs hydraulic systems and components
- Inspects and replaces parts such as clutches, wheel seals, brake linings, drums, bearings, and other components
- Overhauls and rebuilds serviceable components
- Requires some regional traveling to repair company equipment
- Diagnoses and repairs electrical systems and circuitry in accordance with acceptable industry standards
- Performs occasional cutting and welding using both gas and electric welding equipment
- Replaces and adjusts headlights, and installs and repairs accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors, and windshield wiper blades
- Enters work orders on system for equipment inventory purposes
- Adheres to all CEMEX, OSHA, and MSHA rules and regulations at all times
- Wears proper safety equipment while on plant grounds
- Meets or exceeds company safety standards
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned by management
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 3 years related experience, training or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Able to understand, interpret, communicate, and execute instructions given in both verbal and written form
- Bi‑lingual Spanish a plus
- Recognizes potentially hazardous situations, understands instructions given by supervisor, and possesses common sense
- Ability to deal with mechanical problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
- Possession of a valid Driver's License; preference for Class A or Class B CDL or ability to obtain such a license within the new employee evaluation period (180 days) with a driving record that meets company requirements for retrieving or test‑driving company commercial vehicles
- Forklift certified or willing to obtain certification
- TWIC preferred or willing to obtain
- Job involves sitting most of the time, but also involves walking or standing for brief periods
- Walking, sitting, lifting, pushing, pulling, and climbing to a significant degree
- Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects
- Regularly required to talk and hear in order to communicate to employees/visitors
