Responsibilities

  • Maintains, cleans, and repairs cooling towers, air compressors, air handler units, exhaust and supply fans, water pumps and related equipment, direct expansion equipment and water coolers.
  • Complete work requests as assigned by plant operation managers for college‑wide maintenance, renovations and remodeling.
  • Work with electrical, HVAC, plumbing, grounds, locksmith, signage, and special event staff as needed to maintain college facilities and college operations.
  • Work as requested in the event of an emergency such as hurricane, fire, violence or other crisis.
  • Work a flex schedule, including weekends, as required to maintain campus equipment and systems.
  • Perform related work as assigned by supervisor, including duties of a lower‑level Trades worker.
  • Preventive maintenance of all college‑wide mechanical systems, including air‑side filtration, coil cleaning, belts and bearings.
  • Operation and maintenance of all college‑wide HVAC systems, including energy management systems, hydronic heating and cooling systems, direct expansion HVAC equipment, refrigeration and kitchen equipment.
  • Perform tasks using standard tools, materials, codes, methods and safe practices of the HVAC trade.
  • Operate power‑driven and manually operated equipment and tools; maintain and ensure safe operating condition of equipment, tools and vehicles per policy.
  • Operate various hand‑held manual, electrical, gas‑powered tools and equipment, diagnostic meters and gauges.
  • Perform record‑keeping duties (work orders, materials and supplies utilized, cost estimates, labor required, maintenance logs, fuel logs).
  • Recognize and report deterioration, repair needs and maintenance needs to supervisor.
  • Plan, estimate and coordinate assigned tasks; assist with complex projects such as renovations, new construction and complex repairs.
Qualifications
  • Education or training: High school diploma or equivalent required; comparable training may substitute.
  • Years of experience: 3 years in the HVAC trade as an operation engineer, energy management technician, service technician, HVAC mechanic (or equivalent) or in good standing in an acceptable formal training program; valid Florida driver’s license required.
  • Special skills or abilities: Knowledge of standard trade tools, occupational hazards, safety precautions, local codes and regulations; ability to read, interpret and work from blueprints, specifications and operating manuals; maintain records of work performed; skills in repair and maintenance of educational buildings, facilities and related tasks including carpentry, drywall, masonry, demolition, renovations and remodeling; positive human‑relation skills; effective written and oral communication.
