Job Overview

JUVENILE JUSTICE DETENTION OFFICER I (Position #) – The role involves ensuring public safety and providing a safe and secure environment for troubled youth in a structured setting. Duties include monitoring and caring for juvenile offenders, maintaining order, conducting safety procedures such as strip searches, and providing constructive feedback to support youth development.

• Ensure public safety by maintaining a secure environment for juveniles.
• Monitor and supervise youth, provide constructive feedback, and manage conflicts.
• Conduct safety, hygiene, and housekeeping tasks to preserve sanitary conditions.
• Perform strip searches and implement safety procedures.
• Prepare and maintain reports and records relating to supervision.
• Recognize signs of suicide or depression and respond appropriately.
• Address issues of youth experiencing problems.
• Determine appropriate use of force when necessary.

• Minimum 19 years old.
• High school graduate or equivalent.
• No felony convictions or misdemeanors involving perjury, false statement, or dishonorable discharge.
• Must comply with Florida Statute 985.64 regarding fingerprinting, background checks, and related screening.
• Submit an affidavit‑of‑application to confirm compliance with statutory requirements.
• Valid driver’s license required for transportation duties; a three‑year acceptable driving record is preferred.
• Willing to work 24/7 shifts, including rotating shifts, evenings, weekends, and holidays, with potential overtime.
• Obtain certification under Department direct‑care training policy within 180 days of employment.
• If not currently a direct‑care worker in the state system, top‑ranking candidate(s) must complete an Ergometric IMPACT Assessment and Training Test.
• Provide reasonable accommodation per the Americans with Disabilities Act, if needed.
• Subject to drug testing under Florida law.

• Minimum biweekly rate of pay: $1,676.76.
• Paid vacation: 104 hours annually.
• Paid sick leave: 96 hours annually (unlimited accrual).
• 9 paid holidays and 1 personal day per year.
• 6 paid credit hours per term at Florida’s colleges and universities.
