POSITION:

SECONDARY ELA AND SOCIAL STUDIES CURRICULUM COORDINATOR

COMMENCING DATE:

July 1, 2026

Qualifications
  • Master degree in Education with extensive course work in ELA/Social Studies
  • A minimum of five years successful teaching experience
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Deep understanding of scientifically based ELA/Social Studies research and evidence based practices
  • Good physical condition with ability to lift 10 pounds
  • 486, 489, 494 endorsements preferred

  • Excellent knowledge of grades 6-12 ELA/Social Studies standards

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Provides leadership for the schools by offering a variety of services customized to fit the context and needs of the school at the teacher level.
  • Collaborates with other district personnel (e.g. District administrators, building principals, teachers, etc.) for the purpose of selecting and maintaining effective curriculum materials and methodologies that is supported through evidenced-based instructional practices.
  • Assists District and building administrators in understanding and utilizing student assessment data for the purpose of enhancing student academic achievement and meeting state, federal and district objectives.
  • Assists in the design and delivery of ongoing, job-embedded professional development focused on the areas in need of improvement to enable teachers to offer powerful ELA/Social Studies instruction to meet the needs of every child.
  • Coordinates the 6-12 ELA/Social Studies program in the school by:
    • Working with the principal, school leadership team and teachers including external partners to design a school-wide ELA/Social Studies program.
    • Planning, conducting, and facilitating professional development; conducting faculty-wide workshops; providing coaching and mentoring; facilitating small group meetings, department meetings, and across grade level meetings; and working with individual teachers.
    • Aligning ELA/Social Studies strategies within the school.
    • Working with the principal and district office personnel to seek grant monies to fund ELA/Social Studies materials and professional development.
    • Reporting to the administration as requested about classroom performance and professional development.
  • Develop standards-based curriculum using Mississippi College and Career Readiness Standards.
    • Implement differentiated instruction.
    • Administer system-wide assessments.
    • Analyze classroom and school level data.
    • Create a learning community among the ELA/Social Studies teachers.
    • Attend recommended workshops/trainings
    • Incorporate writing strategies in Social Studies curriculum
  • Support 6-12 ELA/Social Students teachers in core curriculum instruction by:
    • Modeling ELA/Social Studies instruction in the classrooms.
    • Coaching/mentoring teachers in ELA/Social Studies instruction.
    • Aligning the use of strategies in content area instruction with those being taught across other disciplines.
    • Coordinating ongoing professional development and goals with the school and district administrators.
    • Assisting teachers with teaching methods, lesson plans, classroom management, and any other area when they need curricular assistance.
    • Researching resources for teachers, as approved by the administration.
    • Assisting in developing ELA/Social Studies centers for classrooms.
    • Attending ELA/Social Studies workshops suggested and approved by Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction.
  • Maintains a professional library of resources for ELA/Social Studies teachers, including materials for teaching units.
  • Orders materials pertaining to ELA and Social Studies and professional development.
  • Performs other duties as deemed necessary by the district administration.
Essential Functions

In addition to the physical and mental capabilities implied by the responsibilities detailed above, the essential functions of a Secondary ELA/Social Studies Curriculum Coordinator include the following: ELA, Social Studies, analyzing data, and occasionally lifting/moving items weighing up to 25 pounds. The job of Secondary ELA/Social Studies Curriculum Coordinator involves adapting to a changing educational environment and therefore while accurate, is not exhaustive.

231 Days Certified/Exempt

SALARY:

Commensurate with the Ocean Springs salary schedule for certified positions for the  school year
