The City of Oceanside is accepting applications for the position of Senior Library Assistant in the Oceanside Public Library – Support Services. Reporting to a Principal Librarian, this role ensures efficient and productive collection management workflow and provides frontline customer service supervision.
Responsibilities- Provide stellar customer service to staff and patrons.
- Help maintain the Library’s Integrated Library System.
- Act as primary contact for Collection Management vendors.
- Get excited about change and new approaches to the Library’s work.
- Work collaboratively with all Library units.
- Create plans to improve workflows and processes.
- Serve as an effective and responsive leader to the Collection Management team.
- Plan, prioritise, assign, supervise, review, and participate in daily operation of large clerical and technical Library units.
- Establish schedules and methods for performing work and providing services.
- Identify resource needs and allocate resources.
- Provide daily oversight of circulation‑related operations at multiple locations.
- May be required to work at any Library location.
- Participate in selection of clerical staff.
- Provide or coordinate staff training.
- Work with employees to correct deficiencies.
- Use integrated automated system and other tools to accomplish tasks.
- Participate in administration of automation system and develop procedures for reports.
- Diagnose and resolve equipment, software, or connectivity problems.
- Perform technical, paraprofessional, and clerical duties supporting various Library sections.
- Oversee maintenance and processing of library materials.
- Oversee or perform copy cataloging of new materials.
- Oversee or perform specialised functions including inter‑library loan services.
- Monitor assigned collections and evaluate materials for discard, replacement, or repair.
- Recommend withdrawals from and additions to collections.
- Assist customers with online and application access and technical needs.
- Provide general and specialised library assistance to patrons via in‑person, phone, email, or electronic means.
- Provide reader’s advisory services and conduct library tours.
- Interpret and apply Library policies and procedures.
- Attend to disruptions or disturbances with confidence and communication skills.
- Compile statistics and write periodic and special reports.
- Maintain accurate catalog and circulation database records.
- Conduct surveys.
- Participate in planning, preparing, and presenting programmes and activities.
- Assist in publicising all aspects of library service including social media.
- Support offsite, outreach, bookmobile, and other service locations.
- Principles and practices of supervision and training.
- Core library policies, procedures, and administrative practices, including confidentiality, freedom of information, and intellectual freedom.
- Basic approaches to accomplishing library tasks using software applications and integrated library systems.
- Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
- Library organisation, principles, methods, materials, practices, and common professional library terminology.
- Principles and practices used in the technical processing of materials in various formats.
- Cataloguing, classification, and related resources.
- Principles of record keeping and basic report preparation.
- English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation for paraprofessional tasks.
- Plan, direct, and coordinate assigned functions.
- Supervise, organise, and review the work of assigned staff.
- Participate in selection, training, and evaluation of staff.
- Evaluate work methods and recommend improved procedures.
- Interpret and explain City and Library policies to public and staff.
- Provide high level of customer service in fast‑paced, high demand environment.
- Solve problems quickly and consider all people involved.
- Deal tactfully and efficiently with the public using independent judgement.
- Apply software, automation, or related skills to internal or external customer service.
