Position Overview

School Bus Attendant – Oceanside Unified School District, Oceanside, CA. This open, promotional recruitment will create one integrated eligibility list. Two positions are available for a 5‑hour/day, 10‑month assignment. The attendant will work under the direction of an assigned supervisor to provide safe transportation and care for students receiving special education services.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in providing safe transportation for students with special education needs.
  • Assist and care for students while on the bus.
  • Monitor, observe, and control student behavior according to approved policies and procedures.
  • Follow oral and written instructions and carry out duties in a timely manner.
  • Perform basic first aid and CPR as needed.
  • Operate harnesses, tie‑downs, and other adaptive devices.
  • Maintain accurate student and bus records.
  • Actively uphold health and safety regulations.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with colleagues.
Qualifications
  • High‑school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience (or a combination of education, training, and experience) working with children who have special education needs.
  • Valid First Aid Certificate; completion of CPR training highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of child guidance and motivational principles related to special‑education services.
  • Understanding of behavior‑management strategies for students with special needs.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to lift, assist, and restrain students physically when necessary.
  • Basic record‑keeping skills.
  • Patience, tact, and courtesy when interacting with diverse groups.
