Position OverviewThe City of Oceanside is currently accepting applications for hourly extra‑help Library Associate II positions with the Oceanside Public Library. This role provides excellent and friendly customer service at locations including the Mission Branch Library, Civic Center Library, Landes Community Center Library, and outreach sites, and may involve driving library vehicles such as the Adelante Bookmobile, home delivery van, Splash Van, or others as needed.
Availability to work evenings and weekends is highly desirable.
This is the journey level within the Library Associate series. Employees at this level are distinguished from the Library Associate I by performing the full range of duties, including assignments that require a working knowledge of the City’s library services. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction and are fully aware of operating procedures and policies. Positions are normally filled by advancement from the One level or by external candidates with prior related experience.
This is an hourly extra‑help position which does not include medical benefits and will not exceed 999 hours per fiscal year.
ResponsibilitiesLibrary Associate II duties include:
- Shelving library materials, checking arrangement, maintaining correct order, and placing materials on book trucks
- Clearing tables and shelves, checking in returned materials, sorting for re‑shelving, and retrieving materials from book drops
- Locating items on shelves, assisting customers with self‑checkout and self‑payment of library fees, and opening and closing procedures of areas, centers, or buildings
- Performing basic processing of materials and supporting advanced materials processing and collection management tasks
- Setting up and supporting displays and events, directly assisting with library programming, outreach efforts, and volunteer work
- Providing general library assistance, basic reference and readers’ advisory assistance, and assisting customers with computer use, photocopies, fax service, and other equipment
- Assisting customers in the use of technology and the Internet, troubleshooting equipment problems as instructed, and performing other related duties as assigned
City vehicle operation may be requested. If assigned to a home delivery vehicle, the Splash Van, or Adelante Bookmobile, operation of City vehicles may be required.
Knowledge of- Alphabetical and numerical filing
- Basic office procedures and practices
- Basic approaches to accomplishing library or related tasks using software applications, coding or other computer skills, and integrated library systems
- Library organization, principles, materials, practices, and common library terminology
- Principles and practices used in the technical processing of materials in various formats
- Follow oral and written instructions
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
- Provide a high level of customer service in an often fast‑paced, high‑demand environment
- Maintain effective relationships with co‑workers
- Implement general library policies and procedures with the general public and staff, and resolve common customer issues with these policies
- Deal tactfully and efficiently with the public, exercising independent judgment
- Apply software, automation, or related skills to internal or external customer service
- Work independently and efficiently with attention to detail and organization
One year of experience in a public library; experience in a direct customer service role is highly desirable.
TrainingEquivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. Additional education such as formal postsecondary courses, a professional certificate or degree is highly desirable.
License/CertificateA current or ability to obtain and maintain a valid California driver’s license.
AbilityBilingual (English/Spanish) language is highly desirable.
Special RequirementThis position requires variable working hours and availability to work evenings, Saturdays, and Sundays at any location where library services may be provided, including bookmobile vehicles or outdoors.
