Environmental Technician

This role supports the Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) department with a primary focus on hazardous materials management, environmental compliance, inspections, reporting, and employee safety training. The Environmental Technician works closely with the EHS Manager to ensure all operations remain compliant with OSHA, DOT, California EPA, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations. The position is well suited to someone with a strong environmental compliance background and Haz Mat experience who can work independently, maintain detailed records, and support waste management activities in a fast-paced industrial or shipyard environment.

Experience on military installations, shipyards, manufacturing facilities, or construction sites is highly desirable.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the EHS Manager with environmental compliance initiatives and hazardous materials (Haz Mat) operations.
  • Conduct daily facility walkthroughs and inspections to identify environmental risks and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Monitor hazardous material accumulation areas and ensure hazardous waste is shipped within required regulatory timelines.
  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly environmental compliance reports to document activities and findings.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of environmental, safety, and hazardous material supplies.
  • Assist with the development and delivery of employee environmental and safety training programs.
  • Participate in weekly training activities, including scheduled Thursday training sessions.
  • Ensure compliance with California EPA, OSHA, DOT, and internal environmental requirements.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, including manifests, inspection logs, and compliance records.
  • Coordinate with approved waste disposal vendors and transport providers to manage hazardous waste shipments.
  • Support internal and external audits, investigations, corrective actions, and regulatory inspections.
  • Identify environmental risks and implement corrective measures to mitigate hazards and improve compliance.
  • Assist with industrial hygiene and workplace safety initiatives in an industrial or shipyard setting.
  • Support large-scale environmental compliance programs as needed, particularly in complex operational environments.

Essential

Skills:

  • 3–5+ years of experience in environmental, Haz Mat, EHS, environmental compliance, or as an environmental technician.
  • Experience conducting inspections, reporting, documentation, and compliance activities in regulated environments.
  • Experience supporting industrial, manufacturing, construction, shipyard, or similar operations.
  • Strong understanding of hazardous waste management procedures, including accumulation and disposal processes.
  • 40-Hour HAZWOPER Certification.
  • DOT Shipper Certification or demonstrated experience shipping hazardous materials.
  • OSHA environmental, safety, or compliance training.
  • RCRA and California Title 22 Hazardous Waste Facility Management Certification.
  • Knowledge of environmental compliance regulations, including California EPA regulations.
  • Knowledge of OSHA requirements related to environmental health and safety.
  • Strong documentation and reporting skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong reliability and attendance record.
  • High professional integrity and strong ethical standards.
  • Ability to work independently and manage tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.

Additional Skills &

Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working on military bases or Department of Defense facilities.
  • Industrial hygienist experience or training.
  • OSHA 30 Certification (1915 preferred).
  • PEIRA Haz Mat Certification (320).
  • Bilingual skills in English and Spanish.
  • Shipyard experience supporting environmental or safety operations.
  • Experience as an Environmental Specialist within a manufacturing plant.
  • Previous experience supporting large-scale environmental compliance programs.
