Position OverviewThe City of Oceanside is accepting applications for the position of Senior Planner. There is currently one position available in the Development Services Department – Planning Division. The Planning Division is responsible for land use planning under federal, state, regional, and local laws, ordinances, and City policies, and serves the community by providing balanced, professional recommendations to the public and City decision makers as they define, shape, and implement Oceanside’s vision.
ResponsibilitiesThe Senior Planner performs a variety of professional planning functions supporting the City’s development review process, long‑range planning, zoning ordinance updates, capital improvement projects, and environmental review. Duties include conferring with the general public and private contractors regarding development projects; conducting field investigations and compiling data for the preparation of reports, maps, charts and other graphic materials; preparing and presenting reports to the Planning Commission and City Council;
supervising the preparation of Planning Commission packets and agendas; supervising and coordinating census projects; supervising filing of development applications; conducting investigations and research involved in studies of land use, population trends, community design, transportation and environmental concerns; assisting in the identification of the City’s long‑range planning needs; preparing strategy plans for residential and commercial revitalization; participating on assigned boards and commissions and preparing related reports;
serving as liaison to the community regarding long‑range planning and development projects; providing assistance to the public regarding renovation of historical buildings; reviewing and preparing environmental impact reports, negative declarations and exemptions for private and public development projects; ensuring conformance with applicable coastal and environmental laws and regulations; preparing applications and processing Resource Agency Permits; interviewing, hiring and supervising consultant teams in the preparation of environmental impact reports and technical documents;
conducting field visits of project sites and environmentally sensitive areas; reviewing and commenting on environmental documents for projects in surrounding areas that may affect the City; assisting in the preparation of grant applications involving City projects and plans; and performing related duties and responsibilities as required.

- Conduct investigations and research involved in studies of land use, population trends, community design, transportation and environmental concerns.
