Position Overview

Location:

San Diego VAMC. This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP). Candidates must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after a complete review of the application.

    Incumbent will provide psychodiagnostic assessment to diagnose mental disorders, perform risk assessment and crisis intervention, administer psychological and/or neuropsychological assessment, and provide full range of psychological interventions consistent with the psychologist's competencies and needs of the MHCL. Provides psychoeducation to patients, family members, and significant others. Provides comprehensive, evidence‑based psychotherapeutic interventions, including individual, family and group psychotherapy. Provides consultation to professional staff within VASDHS and to community providers concerning clinical assessment findings and appropriate treatment plans for patients.

    Develops, implements, and documents the psychotherapeutic treatment plan for assigned patients, including prompt completion of clinical reminders and other required documentation. Incumbent will ensure productivity is maintained at the established level for the program for which he/she is assigned. Adheres to operational policies and procedures for the treatment team, IMPACT Unit, Psychology Service and MHCL, established by the VASDHS, Chief of Psychology, and Associate Chief of Staff of the Mental Health Care Line.

    Collaborates with other health care programs to effectively coordinate services. Complies with national and local performance measures, including timely health care screening and completion of clinical reminders for all patients. Complies with all CPRS documentation procedures, including timeliness standards for documentation, proper patient check‑out procedures (e.g., entering diagnostic and procedure codes), and return to clinic orders. Attends regular Psychology Service staff meetings, Mental Health and Impact Unit Staff meetings and complies with Psychology Service (e.g., peer review).

    The incumbent may supervise psychology interns, psychology practicum students, and psychology fellows in identifying and intervening with psychiatric and behavioral disorders using evidence‑based treatments. The incumbent may provide administrative services related to directing a training program (e.g., internship or fellowship program). Assists psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, mental health pharmacists, other providers and physicians as needed, as well as psychology staff and trainees, to develop an adequate psychological understanding of the Veterans they treat.

    The incumbent conducts program evaluation activities and performance improvement projects to evaluate and enhance psychological services and veteran service delivery. The incumbent may conduct research to improve the understanding and treatment of mental disorders affecting Veterans and at this level may also have research obligations associated with a university faculty appointment and/or VA research program. The incumbent may demonstrate past or present involvement on VA research committees and/or committees at an affiliated institution.
