Job Summary

Under the direction of the supervising teacher or administrator, Temporary Support Assistants (TSAs) assist teachers with the physical, emotional, behavioral, and instructional needs of students at various grade levels. TSAs supervise students throughout the school day, perform instructional tasks, support self‑care, and collect data as outlined by professional staff.

Essential Duties / Responsibilities
  • Participates in routine supervision of students during the school day, including assistance on/off bus, lifting/pushing students, and monitoring entry/exit.
  • Assists students with personal hygiene and self‑help skills, such as toileting, feeding, and grooming.
  • Supports students during instruction and other curriculum tasks, reinforcing subjects and implementing instructional plans.
  • Observes and manages student behavior in classrooms, lunch areas, playgrounds, and other learning environments.
  • Collects data on student performance and provides it to the supervising teacher.
  • Supports students with social, emotional, and behavioral concerns, including implementation of behavior strategies.
  • Follows AACPS policies while assisting students and staff in the building and off‑site activities.
  • Participates in professional development workshops and in‑service training.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.
Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required.
  • Preferred:
    Formal academic courses/training in child development with applications to special education.

Experience

  • None required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Patience and ability to work with students having physical, mental, emotional, and/or multiple disabilities.
  • Reliable, punctual attendance is essential.
  • Ability to employ various teaching styles for diverse learners.
  • Effective communication with diverse populations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid Class C Driver’s License (MD or State of Legal Residence).
  • Daily access to reliable transportation.
Driving Requirements
  • Driving is required to conduct bona fide Board business.
  • Personal vehicle required.
