Teacher Assistant:
Early Childhood Special Education

Seven Oaks Elementary, Odenton, Maryland – Anne Arundel County Public Schools.

Assists classroom teacher and service provider with instructional support for students with disabilities, including supervision, instruction, data collection, and special health care needs. Performs extensive documentation of each essential duty. The position may be 10 or 12 months depending on assignment.

• Adapts classroom activities, assignments and materials under teacher direction to support classroom objectives.
• Assists in implementing instructional programs and lesson plans, providing instruction in individual and group activities.
• Participates in implementation of IEP goals and behavioral plans for students with special needs.
• Performs clerical tasks and prepares instructional materials.
• Maintains data collection and documentation of activities and student assistance.
• Attends meetings, professional development, medical and behavioral trainings.
• Administers immediate first aid and medical assistance as instructed (e.g., diapering, tube feeding, medication). Helps with personal care tasks and physical therapy appliance application per service provider instructions.
• Assists students with mobility needs, including lifting, positioning, wheelchairs, bus loading/unloading, and transportation during school events.
• Supports students with electronic communicators and other assistive technologies.
• Assists with pre‑lunch and lunch activities and monitors students during designated periods.
• Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

• Associate’s Degree in a related field of education from a regionally accredited college or university, or Child Development Associate (CDA) credential.
• For Title I-funded schools: 48 college credit hours or a passing score on a paraprofessional assessment issued by ETS or NES.
• Less than one year related experience working with students with disabilities (preferred).
• Considerable patience and ability to work with students who have physical, cognitive, and behavioral challenges.
• Willingness to learn and implement instructional methods and strategies.
• Ability to employ a variety of teaching styles to respond to diverse learners.
• Ability to meet IEP goals and/or district benchmarks.
• Ability to present and reinforce learning concepts.
• Ability to ensure equipment is connected and functioning properly.
• Proficiency with business software (e.g., Video/Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite).

• Active Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential, or alternate credential meeting qualification.
• For Title I-funded schools: a passing score on a paraprofessional assessment issued by ETS or NES.

• Standing, walking, using hands, reaching, and other activities ranging from 1/3 to 2/3 of the time.
• Eating, toileting, and mobility assistance tasks may involve lifting up to 50 pounds, handling wheelchairs, and transporting students.
• Exposure to mild outdoor and indoor environments, with occasional warm or humid conditions.
