Role Description The MANAGING LIBRARIAN – SOUTHWEST HISTORY & GENEALOGY is a full-time, on-site role based at Ector County Library in Odessa, TX. This role oversees the Southwest History and Genealogy collections and services, including developing, organizing, and preserving specialized materials related to regional history and family research. Day-to-day responsibilities include providing reference and research assistance, guiding patrons through genealogy tools and historical resources, and delivering library instruction sessions or workshops.

The managing librarian also supervises staff and volunteers in the adjacent passports department, coordinates programs and outreach related to local history and genealogy, and collaborates with other library units and community organizations. Additional duties include maintaining accurate records, planning collection growth, ensuring a welcoming research environment, and contributing to overall library initiatives and community engagement.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated proficiency in Library Services, including reference assistance, patron support, and specialized research guidance.
  • Knowledge of preserving historical and genealogical collections.
  • Experience with Library Management, including supervising staff or volunteers, planning services, and overseeing departmental operations.
  • Ability to provide effective Library Instruction through workshops, classes, or one‑on‑one training in genealogy and history research tools.
  • Master’s degree in Library Science or Information Science from an accredited program, or equivalent related education and experience.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to serve a diverse community in a welcoming, inclusive manner.
  • Experience or strong interest in Southwest regional history, genealogy research methods, and use of digital archives and databases.
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail, including the ability to manage multiple projects and maintain accurate records.
