Job Description
OverviewAct as a construction inspector, ensuring contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications. Provide consultancy on work progress, problem resolution, and may serve as the sole inspector or assist in overseeing construction inspection activities for large or complex projects.
Responsibilities- Rejects substandard material and informs producers and suppliers of material and production problems
- Represents the Department in dealings with producers and suppliers.
- Performs engineering-related planning, design, data collection, inspections, assessments, analysis, and review activities for plan development.
- Trains and makes training‑related recommendations to staff on new operations.
- Advises supervisor of inspection activities and problems at plants and assists in coordinating inspections.
- Analyzes procedures to identify deficiencies and recommends improvements to management.
- Assists Project Engineers in determining number of inspectors needed on assigned projects.
- Attends pre‑construction meetings and answers questions from contractors and other attendees.
- Composes correspondence, reports and supporting documents; files; orders supplies and equipment.
- Conducts project reviews and coordinates inspections with various inspectors and other district/division project managers.
- Ensures adequate levels of equipment and materials are assigned to projects; ensures material tests are performed and materials meet required standards
- Ensures contractors build roadways, bridges and related highway structures and/or airport improvements in accordance with plans and specifications.
- Informs plant personnel of material or production problems, rejects substandard material and assists in determining cause for material problems.
- Moves equipment, tools, materials, and products.
- Interprets plans and specifications and negotiates with producers and suppliers to resolve differences.
- Observes and inspects ongoing construction work.
- Prepares and reviews correspondence.
- Coordinates inspection schedules, traffic control needs, and access issues directly with district personnel.
- Resolves differences in interpretation of plans and specifications.
- Performs engineering-related planning, design, data collection, inspections, assessments, analysis, and review activities for plan development by others.
- Drives/travels to geographically separated fabrication plants/project sites to monitor program status; perform unannounced inspection of operations, and problem resolution.
- Schedules, coordinates and performs in‑plant structural product inspections and intermediate audits.
- Independently schedules, coordinates and performs in plant structural product inspections and intermediate audits at local and/or geographically separated locations.
- Mentors and develops technical employees in test and inspection procedures and material specifications.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Experience- Construction Inspector I: 0 years (no experience required). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year‑per‑year basis.
- Construction Inspector II: 1 year construction, construction inspection, engineering support, maintenance and repairs, materials or process inspection; or transportation engineering support related experience.
- Construction Inspector III: 2 years construction, construction inspection, engineering support, maintenance and repairs, materials or process inspection; or transportation engineering support related experience.
- Construction Inspector IV: 3 years construction, construction inspection, engineering support, maintenance and repairs, materials or process inspection; or transportation engineering support related experience.
- Construction Inspector V: 4 years construction, construction inspection, engineering support, maintenance and repairs, materials or process inspection; or transportation engineering support related experience.
- Mandatory:
