The Summer Intern position offers students and early-career professionals the opportunity to gain practical, hands‑on experience in municipal government. Interns will assist with assigned projects, support daily operations, and develop professional skills while working under the guidance of City staff.
The Summer Intern assigned to Finance will support daily operations and assist with departmental projects, gaining hands‑on experience in developing and administrating the City’s operational budget. The intern will participate in preparing monthly bank reconciliations and maintaining records.
Essential Functions- Assist in preparing monthly bank reconciliations and maintaining records as needed to support bank account reconciliations, including the review and investigation of bank analysis fees.
- Assist with the development and administration of the City’s operational budget; gather and compile budget, financial, and technical information from departments, and generate reports.
- Research and compile economic, financial, demographic, and statistical information; create and update charts and tables, and write narratives for budget documents.
- Support departmental operations with regular and timely attendance.
- Support the relationship between the City of Odessa and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintain confidentiality of work‑related issues and city information; perform other duties as required or assigned.

Minimum QualificationsMust be at least 18 years of age. Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program in finance, accounting, or a related field is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Principles of budget preparation and administration.
- Generally Accepted Accounting Principles for public sector financial management.
- Compile data and make necessary adjustments.
- Communicate effectively both in writing and orally.
- Proficiently utilize Word, Excel, and presentation software.
Interns will work up to 40 hours per week. Schedule may vary based on departmental needs and availability. Work is performed in an office, field, or operational setting, depending on assignment. May include sitting, standing, walking, or light physical activity.
Internship DurationTemporary, seasonal position (Summer Internship Program). Start and end dates will be determined by the department and HR.
