Parks Superintendent
OverviewSummary:
Supervises daily maintenance activities on park grounds, buildings, athletic facilities and equipment. Work is performed under the direction of the Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation. This position will supervise the work of assigned supervisors in the areas of parks, landscape and/or facilities maintenance.
- Plans/Organizes daily park maintenance activities.
- Directs the activities of assigned supervisors, plans and prioritizes and assigns tasks and projects.
- Coaches staff and monitors work to develop staff skills. Evaluates their performance.
- Meets regularly with staff to discuss and resolve workload and technical issues and develops goals and priorities.
- Plans work schedules to meet current/future work progress, methods and quality.
- Maintains records for department s tasks, training and safety inspections.
- Supervises preventative maintenance programs.
- Oversees construction of park improvement projects.
- Develops, implements and maintains departmental work order system.
- Coordinates with department supervisors and other City departments for special events.
- Handles all complaints from citizens relating to parks and athletic facilities.
- Supports the departmental operations with regular and timely attendance.
- May serve as Assistant Director in their absence.
- Supports the relationship between the City of Odessa and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
Education, Training and Experience Guidelines: Bachelor's Degree in Park and Recreation or related field. Will consider a combination of education and work experience. Minimum of three (3) years experience in park and recreation field, along with three (3) years in supervisor experience.
Knowledge of:
- Enforcing safety rules and regulations.
- Interviewing, selecting, evaluating, disciplining and terminating personnel.
Skill in:
- Effective writing skills.
- Writing specifications and requisitions for park equipment and materials.
Ability to:
- Be on call for department problems or emergencies.
- Maintain effective working relationship with all city departments and employees.
- Make occasional presentations to City Council and citizen groups.
- Maintain effective communication skills with co-workers, supervisors and the general public.
License and certification requirements: Valid Texas Class C Driver s license. Requires a certificate through the National Recreation and Parks Association as a Certified Playground Safety Inspector or ability to obtain within one year of employment. Pesticide Applicator license is required within one (1) year of employment.
