The University of Texas Permian Basin's College of Engineering and Sciences welcomes applications for a Laboratory Technician in the Department of Chemistry & Geosciences to begin in September 2026

Salary Range

$55, depending on qualifications

Essential Functions

The Laboratory Technician will be responsible for preparing and maintaining the chemical inventory, ordering chemicals and equipment, and preparing solutions for all chemistry courses offered  Technician will also maintain laboratory instructional equipment, ensure the safety of the laboratory and provide support to faculty and students during laboratory experiments.

1. Prepare and maintain the chemical inventory for the laboratory

2. Order chemicals, equipment, and supplies as needed

3. Prepare solutions and chemicals for all chemistry courses

4. Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure its proper function

5. Provide support to faculty and students during laboratory experiments

6. Ensure laboratory safety and compliance with OSHA and hazardous material regulations

Required Qualifications

1. Bachelor's degree in chemistry

2. At least 2 years of experience working in a laboratory environment

3. Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures, equipment, and instrumentation

4. Ability to manage chemical inventory and order chemicals and equipment

5. Familiarity with OSHA and hazardous material regulations

6. Ability to work independently and as part of a team

7. Proficiency in basic computer skills and software programs

Preferred Qualifications

1. M.S. Degree in chemistry or related field

2. Experience in managing an academic laboratory stockroom

3. Excellent organizational and time management skills

4. Good communication and interpersonal skills

Schedule

Generally, the normal work hours for the university are Monday through Thursday, 7:30 - 5:30 pm;
Friday, 8:00 am - 12:00 pm with a one-hour lunch. The individual holding this position may need to be available early morning, evening, and on weekends to meet the needs of the department. Hours worked may differ with some departments.

Standard Working Conditions

1. Able to lift various materials up to 25 pounds on an occasional basis.

2. Able to bend, crouch, and reach continuously.

3. Physically able remain seated, frequently to continuously.

4. Able to remain standing up to 15% of the time.

5. Possesses dexterity abilities required to perform job duties including extensive keyboard work, operating office equipment, performing filing, and other job-related responsibilities that include extensive wrist and hand movement.
