Position: Public Safety Dispatcher 1

Under direct/indirect supervision, the Public Safety Dispatcher (I) performs a full range of telephone operational duties in a 24-hour facility. Receives and records emergency and routine business calls; processes and prioritizes incoming calls for police, security, and MCHS.

Qualifications
  • A.

    Education:

    High school diploma or G.E.D. certification.
  • B. Certification: All new employees will be evaluated under a 30/60/90-day period. During this time, the employee may be disciplined and/or dismissed for failure to perform assigned duties and responsibilities. Throughout this time, the employee is given an opportunity to improve their job knowledge. The employee must be able to acquire a Basic Telecommunicator Operator License within one (1) year of employment/transfer to a position.

    If the Telecommunicator Course is provided by Medical Center Hospital Systems, the employee must agree to a minimum of two (2) years of service with Medical Center Hospital Systems or shall be required to reimburse for the cost of the Telecommunicator Operator License Training. Employees hired prior to October 1, 2024 will have until September 30, 2025 to obtain the Basic Telecommunicator Operator License;

    failure to obtain the license will result in termination of employment.
  • C. Other

    Qualifications:

    Must successfully pass a drug screen, psychological evaluation, and background investigation. Become familiar with any and all computer programs. Regular attendance and punctuality are required. Must be able to work days, evenings, nights, weekends, and some holidays.
Automatic Disqualifiers
  • Any Class B misdemeanor conviction within the last 10 years.
  • Any Class A misdemeanor, felony convictions, or family violence conviction.
Training and Experience
  • Ability to read, write, understand and follow oral and written instructions; accurate typing skills; create a positive attitude toward the department.
  • Ability to maintain consistent composure.
  • Ability to speak clearly, calmly and authoritatively to persons who may be rude, confused or frightened; effective telephone skills.
  • Must have a valid Texas driver's license.
Unusual Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Willingness and/or ability to work rotating shifts, holidays and weekends; work on an on-call basis, work overtime; work irregular duty assignments; work under undesirable and hazardous conditions; conform to department grooming standards; successfully pass a personal background investigation, medical physical, drug screen, psychiatric examination, dispatch aptitude test and oral interview; work alone; attend educational sessions as required; travel out of town for one day or more.

  • Continuously sit during the shift.
  • Occasionally reach above shoulder height.
  • Continuously work with fingers.
  • Continuously coordinate eye, hand, and foot to operate radio and related equipment.
