The University of Texas Permian Basin welcomes applications for the position of Building Attendant / Maintenance Worker II for Student Housing
Salary Range
$34,000.00 - $38,000.00 depending on qualifications
Includes on campus apartment, utilities, and meal plan
Essential Functions
The Building Attendant (Maintenance) is a hands-on maintenance position supporting the University of Texas Permian Basin's residential facilities, including traditional residence halls and apartment-style housing. This role helps ensure safe, clean, and well-maintained living environments for students, staff, and guests. The Building Attendant serves as the first line of response for housing-related maintenance needs, performing basic troubleshooting, routine repairs, and preventive maintenance.
While the position reports to Student Housing, it works closely with the University's Physical Plant team, which provides support for higher-skilled or specialized work involving HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and life-safety systems. This is an excellent opportunity for a dependable, service-oriented individual who enjoys hands-on work, problem-solving, and contributing to a campus community.
* Respond to assigned maintenance requests and work orders within residential facilities
* Perform basic troubleshooting and corrective actions
* Complete general maintenance and minor repairs, including light plumbing, basic electrical work, and minor HVAC-related tasks
* Replace light bulbs, ballasts, switches, and fixtures as needed
* Perform routine HVAC filter changes and basic system checks
* Assist with minor painting, drywall patching, and cosmetic repairs
* Maintain cleanliness, organization, and safety in mechanical rooms and work areas
* Communicate professionally with Housing staff, students, faculty, and Physical Plant personnel
* Follow established safety procedures and university policies
* Participate in an on-call rotation to support residential facilities outside of normal business hours
* On-call coverage rotates weekly among Building Attendants
* After-hours calls are typically limited to urgent or safety-related housing issues
* The Building Attendant provides initial assessment and basic troubleshooting
* Issues requiring advanced technical work are escalated to Physical Plant staff
* Clear procedures, escalation paths, and support are in place during on-call periods
Required Qualifications
1. High school diploma or GED equivalent
2. Three (3) years of general maintenance experience
3. Ability to troubleshoot issues and follow safety procedures
4. Good communication and organizational skills
5. Valid Texas driver's license with a clean record for at least three years
6. Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds and remain on feet for extended periods, consistent with job demands
7. Ability to work safely around chemicals, equipment, and environmental hazards while adhering to established procedures
Preferred Qualifications
1. Five (5) years of general maintenance experience
2. Experience in residence halls, apartments, hotels, or other multi-occupant facilities
3. Experience in dining or commercial facility maintenance
4. Ability to read, write, and comprehend English

Schedule
Generally, the normal work hours for the university are Monday through Thursday, 7:30 - 5:30 pm;
Friday, 8:00 am - 12:00 pm with a one-hour lunch. The individual holding this position may need to be available early morning, evening, and on weekends to meet the needs of the department. Hours worked may differ with some departments.
