Equipment Mechanic I, II, or III – Fleet Operations Division

Location:

Odessa, TX – 3901 East US Highway 80, Odessa.

Pay: $50,000–$80,000 per year (depending on level). FLSA status:
Nonexempt. Travel: 25 % of the time. Shift: Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. On‑site.

Job Overview

The Texas Department of Transportation’s Fleet Operations Division seeks a mechanic to maintain and repair a wide range of wheeled vehicles and construction equipment, ensuring daily operations and emergency response capability across the state.

Responsibilities
  • Adjust brakes and replace brake system parts, including air brake and anti‑locking systems.
  • Analyze and interpret diagnostic information from computerized systems.
  • Complete repair order paperwork and maintain accurate data in the fleet information system.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on motor vehicles and equipment.
  • Check lighting and wiring mechanisms for proper function.
  • Prepare vehicles for use by checking safety features (first aid kits, fire extinguishers, mobile radios).
  • Troubleshoot, test, and repair electrical systems, electronic ignitions, and fuel injection systems.
  • Use computerized diagnostic analyzers to perform complex diagnostic work.
  • Perform quality assurance and analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
  • Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities by Level
  • Level II: Trains less experienced technicians.
  • Level III: Leads and trains less experienced technicians; serves as Shop Coordinator in their absence.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Equipment Mechanic I: 2 years of experience in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
  • Equipment Mechanic II: 4 years of experience.
  • Equipment Mechanic III: 7 years of experience.
  • Associate’s degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 years of experience.
  • Certificates of completion from a Technical Training Institute may substitute for experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
  • Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required; must attain within 120 calendar days of registration.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Commercial driver’s license (CDL).
  • Diesel or Automotive Technology Associate’s Degree or technical certifications.
  • ASE certifications.
  • Experience using diagnostic equipment and software.
  • Experience working on heavy or construction equipment.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Exposure to extreme temperatures (below 32 °F or above 100 °F for more than one hour).
  • Exposure to noise.
  • Must wear protective gear (respirator, hard hat, etc.).
  • Medium work: lift up to 50 lbs; frequently lift or carry up to 25 lbs.
  • Kneeling or bending to the knees.
  • Job simulation required for interview assessment.
  • Pre‑employment physical required.
  • Drug test required; random testing applies.
  • Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes after 24‑hour notification for emergencies.
  • Alternate schedules during emergency response or adverse weather events.
  • Travel to other district/division shops within the state as needed.
