Traffic Systems Technician I or II; Traffic Operations

Overview

Traffic Systems Technician I or II (Traffic Operations) – Odessa District. The position involves outdoor, field-based work maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing traffic systems and technologies. Working as part of a team, you will handle installation, maintenance, and repair of electronic traffic control, communication, data collection, and illumination systems. Travel may be statewide and work may occur in heavy traffic environments.

• Assist in installing, maintaining, modifying, testing, troubleshooting, inspecting, and repairing electronic traffic control, communication, data collection, and illumination systems.
• Assist in installing, troubleshooting, and maintaining hardware and software for traffic systems, Intelligent Transportation Systems, or the Statewide Traffic Analysis and Reporting System.
• Monitor and maintain clear work zones and clean up construction sites after completion.
• Operate, maintain, and service equipment such as bucket trucks, drilling and pole-setting rigs, concrete saws, trenching machines, cable locating instruments, insulation testers, and an 18-wheel calibration truck.
• Follow safety procedures when working near high voltage, gas, water, or heavy traffic utilities.
• Learn to identify, troubleshoot, problem-solve, and identify possible new site characteristics.
• Respond to emergency situations to assist with repair and maintenance of traffic signals, systems, lighting, or data collection equipment.
• Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.

• Assist in designing and reviewing traffic signal, data collection, and illumination design projects.
• Identify and troubleshoot site characteristics and inspect construction methods to ensure contractor compliance with plans and specifications.
• Install, maintain, and replace cameras, LED and fiber optic signs, and cables; monitor communication devices/systems; move related equipment as required.
• Install, maintain, modify, adjust, test, troubleshoot, inspect, and repair electronic traffic control, communication, data collection, and illumination systems.
• Monitor work zones and maintain clean construction sites; operate and service related equipment.
• Prepare written reports on system status, inventory needs, and issues encountered.
• Collaborate with governmental and private entities regarding utilities and rights-of-way.
• Follow safety procedures for utilities and heavy traffic areas; respond to emergencies; perform other duties as assigned.

High School diploma or equivalent.

No experience required. 1 year in construction, electronic troubleshooting, electrical construction/installation, electromechanical work, traffic management, transportation engineering/design, or traffic systems maintenance (experience can be full-time or prorated part-time).

• Valid driver’s license at the time of application (state vehicle operation required).
• Commercial Class A Driver's License or ability to obtain CDL A within 120 calendar days of employment.
• For military veterans: US Military CDL-equivalent conditions apply;
  Texas Class A CDL must be obtained within 120 days of employment.

• Knowledge of applicable plans, specifications, estimates preparation and compliance; construction equipment operations;
  The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices; electrical construction procedures; safety standards; hazardous materials management.
• Proficiency in using, maintaining, and repairing tools and equipment; safe operation of applicable equipment; ability to work with others safely.

• Various lifting requirements by weight class; ability to lift up to 50 lbs; ability to move objects across work sites.
• Physical activities including walking, standing, bending, reaching, crouching, crawling, kneeling, and climbing; doing repetitive motions; close visual acuity for inspection and measurement; ability to work in indoor and outdoor environments and in extreme temperatures.
