Position Information:
TxDOT's Odessa District seeks a Transportation Maintenance Tech I, II or III for the Odessa Maintenance Office. The role includes operating construction equipment, performing roadway maintenance, traffic control, and emergency response support.

Salary Plan

  • Transportation Maintenance Tech II: A17 ($54,000 - $64,469) annually
  • Transportation Maintenance Tech III: A18 ($56,400 - $71,055) annually

Essential Duties Transportation Maintenance Tech I
  • Assist in identifying, repairing, and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports, and posts.
  • Perform basic welding as needed.
  • Move equipment/tools, materials, and products related to these activities.
  • Assist local law enforcement at accident sites and support stranded motorists.
  • Assist with traffic control: place and gather cones, warning signs, and barricades.
  • Determine placement of traffic control devices and install/move them.
  • Inspect barricades for compliance with standards.
  • Maintain highways and rights-of-way; perform roadway repairs; erect and repair guard rails, highway markers, and signs.
  • Haul materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Maintain picnic and rest areas, maintenance yards, and comfort stations.
  • Collect litter and roadway debris.
  • Mow rights-of-way, picnic and rest areas; perform plant and landscape maintenance, including trimming trees and brush.
  • Operate light equipment: front-end loader (one cubic yard or less), pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing, and minor repairs on equipment; complete required reports.
  • Sand or clean bridges and roads, post warning signs, and perform other work during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
  • Inspect maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship.
  • Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
Transportation Maintenance Tech II
  • Serve as the sole maintenance contract inspector on small projects.
  • Inspect traffic control devices and placement at construction sites for compliance with specifications, safety laws, and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Maintain construction project records and/or bridge inspection records; process related paperwork; review files for compliance with the bridge inspection Manual of Procedures.
  • Maintain highways and rights-of-way; perform skilled roadway repairs; erect and repair guard rails, highway markers, and signs.
  • Operate heavy equipment: front-end loader (one and a half cubic yards or more), tractor‑trail haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint stripper, and dump truck.
  • Identify, repair, and install signs and delineators; perform welding; move equipment/tools, materials, and products.
  • Inspect routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship.
  • Identify, analyze, and implement solutions for complex maintenance problems.
  • Inspect materials, equipment, and production procedures to ensure construction materials meet Department specifications.
  • Work on a survey crew; operate survey instruments such as theodolite, transit, level, electronic distance meter, and total survey station.
  • Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
Transportation Maintenance Tech III
  • Maintain highways and rights-of-way; perform highly skilled roadway repairs; erect and repair guard rails, highway markers, and signs.
