Vehicle Mechanic

Wage/Hour Status:

Auxiliary PG 9

Primary Purpose

Perform lubrication and preventive maintenance on district vehicles to ensure their safe and efficient operation.

Qualifications

Education/Certification:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements (P & S), or the ability to obtain one within one year of hire date.
  • State School Bus Driver Certification, or the ability to obtain certification within one year of hire date.
  • Good driving record.
  • Ability to pass Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). examination and pre-employment drug test.
  • Ability to pass a background check.

Special Knowledge

Skills:

  • Knowledge of lubrication and preventive maintenance procedures for gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles.
  • Ability to perform routine vehicle maintenance tasks such as oil changes, tire rotations, and filter replacements.
  • Ability to safely operate district vehicles, including school buses, in various weather and road conditions.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to manage bus riders effectively while driving.

Experience:

  • Experience in vehicle maintenance and repair preferred.
  • Experience driving a school bus or similar vehicle preferred.
Major Responsibilities and Duties
  • Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance tasks on district vehicles, including oil changes, lubrication, tire rotations, and filter replacements.
  • Assist in carrying out responsibilities and duties associated with preventive maintenance in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Safely operate school buses and other district vehicles as needed.
  • Manage student behavior while operating a school bus.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance and repairs performed.
  • Report any vehicle defects or needed repairs to the Shop Supervisor promptly.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety standards and regulations.
  • Maintain cleanliness of work area and tools.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Shop Supervisor.
  • Working Conditions
    • Occasional prolonged or irregular hours.
    • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs.
    • Exposure to various weather conditions.
    • Exposure to noise, dust, and fumes from vehicle maintenance operations.

    Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

    Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent district wide travel; occasional prolonged or irregular hours. Be Able to lift 75 lbs.
