The Public Works Maintenance
- Streets position is generally responsible for participating in the maintenance and repair of the City’s streets and storm sewer infrastructure.

PayThis position is a union hourly position. The pay rate is set per the contract. Starting Range: $33.69/hr pay Rate will increase by $3/hr after the first year of employment. The hourly pay rate will increase $3 again after the second year of employment.

General Street maintenance and support of the Sanitary Sewer, Water, and Wastewater Treatment Plant Divisions of the Operations Group of Public Works; general operation of street maintenance equipment, sewer cleaning equipment and trenching. Work involves responsibility for performing duties of a manual nature. An employee in this class may be asked to drive and operate commercial equipment. Work is usually performed under the supervision of an employee of a higher classification, but many types of work assigned may be repetitive in nature and, once learned, can be carried on without difficulty under general supervision.
EssentialDuties
- Assists in the cleaning and unclogging of storm sewer lines, manholes and catch basins; assists other personnel in such tasks as laying storm sewer lines, building manholes and catch basins.
- Assists other employees in miscellaneous concrete work.
- Performs various street maintenance duties, such as cleaning gutters; spreading and shoveling snow; picking up fallen tree limbs and branches; assisting in the installing and cleaning of culverts.
- Loads and unloads heavy materials from trucks; operates heavy machinery and power equipment.
- Engages in a variety of grounds maintenance work, such as cultivating, pruning, spraying and trimming; cuts grass and weeds with hand tools and power mowers.
- Performs routine maintenance work, such as filling equipment with fuel, checking oil, sharpening mower blades, and other related work.
- Assists in the maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment, inspects equipment for safety and makes repairs as needed.
- Performs routine maintenance on new and existing traffic control devices, such as installing, repairing and replacing traffic signs and signposts.
- Ability to work overtime and staggered shift assignments, including weekends, as needed.
- Availability is required for emergency callouts to repair water line breaks, manage sewer back ups, or removal of snow from city streets and properties.
- Performs related work as required.
- Ability to pass an essential functions evaluation applicable to the requirements of the position (see separate listing for compliant tests).

Reports to the Streets Foreman as well as other supervisory staff.
Essential Skills/Abilities- Ability to productively use a personal computer and iPad, (i.e. file management)- Required.
- Understand, interpret, explain, and apply relevant policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Good communication skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public.
- Technical competence and basic electrical skills.
- Ability to use, (or learn to use), a variety of tolls and equipment effectively.

Education and Experience:- High School diploma, or equivalent
- Required. - Two years of Public Works maintenance experience
- Required. - Valid Drivers’ License with driving record in good standing as required by the City’s insurance company; commercial driver’s license classification B, (CDL-B)- Required
- Additional technical trainings/ certifications for applicable responsibilities
- Preferred. - Experience in street and storm sewer maintenance
- Preferred. - Experience in heavy equipment operation
- Preferred.

Physical Requirements:- Ability to work outside in all weather conditions, (i.e. hot, cold, wet, etc.)- Required.
