Civil Construction Superintendent – Earthwork & Underground Utilities

NLC (Next Level Contractors) is seeking an experienced Civil Construction Superintendent to lead field operations across active heavy civil projects throughout Utah. This is a hands-on field leadership position for a Superintendent with at least five years of experience overseeing earthwork, grading, and underground utility construction. You'll be responsible for coordinating multiple crews, maintaining project schedules, tracking performance against budget, and ensuring field operations stay productive, safe, and aligned with project plans and specifications.

This is not an office-based position. Although NLC is headquartered in Ogden, you will report directly to assigned project sites throughout Utah based on the company's active project schedule.

We're looking for a Superintendent who can see beyond today's work. You should be comfortable planning ahead, anticipating manpower and equipment needs, maintaining a 20-day look-ahead schedule, and taking ownership of field execution from planning through completion.

  • Manage and coordinate multiple crews simultaneously
  • Oversee earthwork, excavation, grading, and underground utility operations
  • Plan manpower, equipment, materials, and daily production requirements
  • Provide clear direction to foremen and field personnel to maintain productivity and project expectations
  • Coordinate subcontractors, vendors, equipment, and other field resources
  • Monitor daily production and proactively address obstacles that could impact project performance
  • Maintain high standards for safety, workmanship, accountability, and jobsite organization
  • Serve as a key field connection between crews, project management, and company leadership

Scheduling & Project Execution

  • Develop, manage, and maintain a 20-day look-ahead schedule for active projects
  • Coordinate upcoming labor, equipment, materials, subcontractors, and project requirements
  • Read and interpret civil construction plans, drawings, specifications, and project documentation
  • Monitor field progress against project schedules and make adjustments when necessary
  • Sequence construction activities to maintain efficient workflow and minimize downtime
  • Anticipate upcoming project needs and potential conflicts before they impact production
  • Coordinate with project management to maintain milestones and overall completion schedules

Budget & Cost Management

  • Track field production and project performance against established budgets
  • Monitor labor, equipment, material usage, and other project costs
  • Compare actual field performance against projected costs and production expectations
  • Identify potential cost overruns and communicate concerns before they significantly impact project profitability
  • Help identify opportunities to improve production efficiency and control project costs
  • Maintain accurate field documentation necessary for effective project and financial tracking

Preconstruction & Project Planning

  • Review plans, specifications, project scope, and site conditions before and during construction
  • Provide field insight during pre-cost estimating and project planning
  • Help identify constructability concerns, equipment requirements, manpower needs, and potential project challenges
  • Collaborate with project leadership to establish practical field execution plans
  • Use previous heavy civil experience to identify potential risks before work begins

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of Superintendent experience within heavy civil construction
  • Strong experience overseeing earthwork, grading, excavation, and underground utility projects
  • Proven ability to successfully manage multiple crews and scopes of work simultaneously
  • Strong understanding of heavy civil construction sequencing and field production
