FLSAJob Summary /Basic Function
The Graduate Studies Peer Mentor plays an essential role in supporting graduate student success through the Graduate Studies Peer Mentor Initiative and the Office of Mentoring Programs. This position is considered a high-impact educational practice, providing peer mentors the opportunity to apply their knowledge, skills, and leadership abilities in service to their peers while also strengthening their own professional preparation.
Grad Peer Mentors support the academic, professional, and personal success of graduate mentees through intentional mentoring in one‑on‑one, small group, and drop‑in settings. Focus areas include:
- Navigation of campus resources (financial aid, registration, wellness, advising, etc.) and program‑specific supports (services, career pathways, etc.)
- Connection to campus and community (graduate student belonging, networking, professional organizations, and engagement in programs/events)
Grad Peer Mentors will work under the supervision and support of the Office of Mentoring Programs (e.g., meeting with the Mentorship Development & Implementation Coordinator). Mentors are required to participate in training, staff meetings, and workshops throughout the year, as well as complete certification requirements in their first semester of employment.
Grad Peer Mentors may mentor students across all graduate programs, not solely within their own area of study.
Key Responsibilities- Serve as a positive role model and representative of the graduate students and their programs
- Demonstrate cultural competence and the ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds, academic experiences, and career goals
- Facilitate one‑on‑one, small group, and workshop‑style mentoring sessions
- Provide guidance with graduate processes such as scholarship applications, FAFSA , registration, and other university services
- Support outreach through programming, events, and digital communication
- Model professionalism, accountability, integrity, active listening, and effective communication
- Actively give and receive feedback to strengthen mentoring practice
- Collaborate with fellow mentors as an engaged and reliable team member to develop resources for grad students, by grad students
- Maintain consistency and punctuality in scheduled work hours and meetings
- Track mentoring activities (sessions, outreach, events, etc.) using required reporting tools
- Communicate in a professional, timely, and student‑centered manner with supervisors, mentees, peers, and partners
- Use Google Calendar to schedule and manage mentee appointments
Complete additional training as needed for specific mentee populations or cohorts.
Required Qualifications- Must be a current graduate student, enrolled in 6+ credits
- Maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher
- Be curious, flexible, and willing to try new things! This is a new program that we are developing together, so there will be trial and error
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including active listening and conflict management
- Organizational and time management skills (Google Calendar experience preferred)
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team setting
