The Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (USDB) is seeking two Deaf Mentors to serve families with deaf/hard‑of‑hearing children aged birth to three years in Northern Utah and the St. George area.
Key Responsibilities- Provide home‑based services to families with deaf/hard‑of‑hearing children, covering American Sign Language (ASL) and deaf culture.
- Prepare and write lesson plans.
- Perform weekly home visits, follow the curriculum provided, and model activities for parents to work with children during the week.
- Help families access deaf community activities and events.
- Apply bilingual, bicultural teaching methods to deaf/hard‑of‑hearing children.
- Must be deaf.
- Must have advanced ASL skills.
- Must have knowledge of Deaf culture.
- Must be well‑versed in language acquisition, principles of ASL best practices, and have a specialization in teaching adults the principles of ASL and Deaf culture.
- Deal with people sensitively, tactfully, and professionally.
- Communicate clearly and effectively.
- Maintain strict confidentiality.
- Travel is required.
- Willingness to work a schedule that meets the needs of families, including evenings and Saturdays, and to participate in multiple Deaf culture events throughout the year.
- Work in a typical office setting that is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Observe safety and fire regulations.
- Typical duties may include sitting, walking, standing, bending, carrying light items, and driving an automobile. Special physical demands are not required.
- Preference given to applicants with a degree in Early Childhood Education and/or experience working with deaf/hard‑of‑hearing children.
- Work schedule:
Monday through Friday; 7.5 hours per day (183 days per school year).
