Job Summary
The Special Education resource para educator assists the supervising teacher by performing a variety of tasks to support instruction and classroom programming. The para educator works under the direction of the supervising teacher and is primarily responsible for providing direct services to students. Core responsibilities include attendance, physical presence, and timeliness, which are essential functions of this position.
Essential Functions- Implement drill and practice exercises designed by the teacher for groups and individual students.
- Keep accurate data on assigned groups and/or individual students.
- Supervise and monitor student instructional activities within the school and in community settings, such as public transportation, recess, employment skill development, and self‑help skill development.
- Provide personal maintenance care for students, including feeding, toileting, diaper changes, and hygiene activities.
- Use appropriate procedures to manage student behavior in accordance with district policies.
- Support a positive school environment that fosters self‑concept and emotional wellbeing.
- Supervise students to maintain a safe learning environment.
- Use classroom materials and technology appropriately.
- Assist students in regular classes.
- Prepare and adapt instructional materials under the direction of the classroom teacher.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding student progress and limitations, discussing only with the supervising teacher and related professionals.
- Work assigned hours and attend bus supervision duties when required.
- Participate in professional development training mandated by the Special Education Department.
- Ensure consistent presence and punctuality, an essential function of this position.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- For Title 1 schools only: 48 hours of college credit or pass the Para Pro exam.
- Prior work with individuals with disabilities preferred.
- Follow directions provided by the special education teacher and related service professionals for instructional practice, behavioral interventions, and functional skill development.
- Operate testing and data collection tools effectively.
- Manage stress effectively.
- Decide ways to accomplish tasks assigned by the classroom teacher and related service professionals.
- Follow specific guidelines and take directions well.
- Make suggestions and follow final directions.
- Focus on safety for self and others.
- Interact positively with students, parents, staff, teachers, administration, and other district personnel.
- Oversee the safety of students.
- Not applicable.
- Mainly work in the classroom, may also work inside or outside the building.
- Working conditions can include hot and cold weather.
- May experience stress from disruptive students or groups.
- Speak and/or hear. Frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, and crouch. Occasionally required to use hands to handle or feel and to climb or balance.
- Vision abilities: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
- Stand or sit for long periods of time.
- Lift or move up to 50 lbs.
