Job SummaryThe Military‑Affiliated Student Center (MASC) Student Certifier position is responsible for helping School Certifying Officials prepare student documentation to be sent to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This is achieved by reviewing student submissions and verifying courses against VA standards. Student Certifiers will help students in person, via email, or by phone to explain benefits, inform students of VA regulations, and help students receive GI Bill benefits.
The position serves as the first line of the certification process, requiring detail‑oriented work to ensure proper student submissions. The role also includes general office duties such as greeting students, answering phones, and occasionally representing the Military Affiliated Student Center at on‑ and off‑campus events.
- Review student classes and degree programs
- Know VA rules and regulations on approved courses
- Assist School Certifying Officers with enrollment certifications
- Manage, file, and maintain student records
- Contact students to explain benefits and payment processes
- Answer questions about benefits and the GI Bill enrollment process
- Assist with personnel and administrative tasks as assigned
- Work one‑on‑one with students to address concerns
- Refer students to appropriate Weber State services or departments when applicable
- Staff MASC booths at events when necessary
- Call students to follow up on questions and concerns
- Attend regular meetings and trainings scheduled by supervisor
- Attend university training when appropriate (e.g., financial aid, student‑support training)
- Assist with planning and executing events and programs
- Must have or be able to obtain a FAFSA:
Federal Work‑Study Card - Knowledge of VA and/or Military processes
- Enrolled at least half‑time (6 or more credits per semester)
- Minimum 2.0 GPA
- Ability to work well with persons of diverse backgrounds, including those who are differently‑abled
- Proficient use of email and calendar for communication and organization
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint)
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Customer‑service skills developed to better serve students and staff
- Criminal background check required as a condition of employment
- Organization skills
- Experience using GI Bill benefits
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Team‑oriented and proactive
- Independent work capacity
Most of the work is sedentary, with occasional lifting of up to 10 pounds and infrequent walking or standing.
Physical RequirementsEmployees must be able to perform detailed tasks with or without assistance, sit most of the time, and occasionally move or shift light loads.
Visual Acuity RequirementsColor, depth perception, and field of vision are required for most tasks.
Environmental ConditionsThe position is performed in a typical office environment with no substantial exposure to adverse conditions.
