Special Education Complex Support Needs Staff Assistant [ESP

Location: Ogden High School, Ogden, Utah
Position Type: Part‑time
Salary: $17.85 per hour
General PurposeResponsible for providing intensive, specialized support to students with significant cognitive, physical, behavioral, or medical needs. The focus is managing safety, delivering care, and implementing individualized plans. Provide constant supervision in various settings, ensuring a safe environment. This job requires patience, empathy, emotional resilience, and the ability to build trust with individuals and families.
Responsibilities- Work one‑on‑one or in small groups to assist students in achieving educational, social, and life‑skills goals under the direction of the Special Education Teacher.
- Rotate groups periodically during the school day with teachers and other staff assistants.
- Assist students with their physical needs, such as feeding, diapering, toileting, pushing wheelchairs, and lifting on and off bus, as required.
- Maintain classroom calendars, bulletin boards, and other room arrangements.
- Provide reinforcement as prescribed by the Special Education Teacher, Therapists, or nurses.
- Provide hand‑over‑hand assistance for students as needed.
- Assist regular education teachers and special education students in mainstreaming.
- Record data on individual student performance and input information on the computer.
- Take children out in the community to participate in activities.
- Assist in lesson preparation and presentation such as cutting, laminating, coping, die cutting, coloring, gluing, bulletin board creation, room decoration, and snack preparation.
- Use a data sheet to record progress of students on classroom simulations (money, shopping, banking, etc.).
- Provide prescribed behavioral support.
- Record engaged time for students.
- Assist students with complex support needs in reading, math, spelling, and record student answers to assignment problems.
- Monitor life‑support equipment; keep detailed records on suctioning, ventilation settings, and absenteeism.
- Administer medication to the student as required.
- Apply behavior modification techniques to assist students in learning.
- Receive training on life‑support equipment, suctioning, catheterization, etc., as needed.
- Attend conferences and training as recommended.
- Follow plans outlined by Specialized Teachers, Therapists, and nurses according to each student’s individualized educational plan.
- Conduct exercises with individual students or small groups to reinforce speech training.
- Record student activities for use by Therapists and document progress.
- Prepare materials to supplement Therapist‑assigned activities and create files to track progress.
- Assist students in basic language skills and listening comprehension in the classroom.
- Assist with sanitation of classrooms and bathrooms.
- Provide a consistent atmosphere for children and teachers by attending daily.
- Perform other classroom duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- One (1) year of related experience preferred.
Physical Requirements
- The job occasionally requires light physical exertion, including walking, standing, operating a motor vehicle, and other light activities.
- Moderate physical exertion may be required for handling medium‑weight materials (11–50 pounds) and extensive standing or walking, bending, stooping, climbing, or helping students with physical needs.
- Work is occasionally carried out in mildly disagreeable conditions, such as noise, crowded environments, outdoor weather, or extended periods of sitting or standing, which may cause discomfort.
- The role typically involves contact with students, parents, teachers, principal, assistant principal, or other staff members.
