Job Summary: Student Career Mentor (College of Science)

Looking for a flexible, meaningful student job that will help you build your résumé and professional skills? Career Services is seeking a positive, team-oriented student to serve as a career mentor, support marketing and outreach in the College of Science, present on career-related topics, help with events, and assist with a science-focused career information database and website. Training will be provided.

Job will require up to 20 hours per week with flexible scheduling, one mandatory one‑hour training meeting each week.

Responsibilities
  • Assist students, employers, and visitors in person, by phone, and through email at the Career Services Front Desk
  • Review student appointments, employer accounts, and job postings in Handshake
  • Maintain a welcoming and professional office environment
  • Meet individually with students to help strengthen résumés, cover letters, and interview skills
  • Assist students with Handshake and Linked In profiles
  • Support Career Services events
  • Give presentations to groups on career-related topics
  • Assist with marketing and outreach for events, presentations, and other services
  • Conduct internet research and help maintain the science-related database and website info
  • Identify and post science-related jobs and internships
  • Communicate with science employers and maintain employer information
  • Complete other projects as assigned
Required Qualifications
  • Excellent interpersonal, teamwork, and presentation skills
  • Strong computer skills, comfortable with Microsoft Office including Excel, and able to pick up new technical skills quickly
  • Solid project management skills and good attention to detail
  • Must be enrolled as a full‑time student each semester
  • Maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA
  • Submit a FAFSA each year to be considered for Federal Work‑Study funding (this requirement does not apply to international students). Students who applied for Federal Work‑Study but were not awarded funding are still welcome to apply and may be considered for the position.
Preferred Qualifications
  • GPA > 3.0 (higher GPAs strongly preferred)
  • Major in the College of Science preferred, although candidates in other majors with a strong technical background and communication skills are considered
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud products, HTML/CSS, SQL, or basic coding (
    but not required
    )
Eligibility Criteria
  • Full‑time enrollment each semester
  • Minimum 2.0 GPA
  • Federal Work‑Study eligibility as specified above
Physical Requirements
  • Bending, reaching, and lifting activities as described, including lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Prolonged standing and walking, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Use of upper extremities for pressing, thrusting, or drawing objects.
  • Repetitive hand motion and use of visual acuity for data analysis and computer use.
Work Conditions
  • Work alternates between indoor office environment and outdoor conditions.
  • Exposure to variable weather conditions outside of the office.
