Youth In Care Mentor

The job of Youth-In-Care Mentor was established for the purpose of building a strong relationship with students based on mutual trust and open communication focused on success tors provide individualized academic and behavioral support to a defined caseload of students, specifically students in foster care or juvenile justice.

Primary duties include, but are not limited to, engaging in the following activities with support and direction:

  • Work with students as part of their support system to review grades, behaviors, and attendance based on SMART goals determined with the students on an individual basis.
  • Work in a supportive and cooperative effort with classroom teachers, counselors, student advocates, SRO, administration and state case workers to build relationships and implement a strong support system for students and families.
  • Act as a liaison and build relationships between the school, the case worker and the foster homes as well as any other agency that may be involved with the student to facilitate communication and promote problem-solving and striving to build constructive family-school relationships.
  • Supports a positive school climate while interacting with students, families, staff and community members
  • Facilitate social and emotional growth with students
  • Complete progress charts and evaluate student progress, including attendance, behavior, and academic data
    • Systematically "Checks" on students, assessing their engagement with school and learning through close monitoring of their attendance, behaviors, and grades.
    • "Connects" with students, offering individualized interventions in partnership with school personnel, families, foster parents, and community service providers. Assists assigned teaching personnel in the supervision and instruction of students; monitor student performance variables (e.g., absences, tardies, behavior referrals, grades)
  • Assist with the supervision of students during instructional and non-instructional time
  • Analyze data from systematic monitoring to design personalized interventions and document progress.
  • Provide personalized, timely interventions to help students solve problems, build skills and enhance competence.
  • Help student both individually and in small groups, as well as organize and manage assigned tasks with students
  • Attend extra-curricular activities such as games, choir and band concerts, theatre, art shows, and sports when deemed necessary.
  • Maintain instructional materials, daily activity/incident logs and/or manual and electronic files/records
  • Coordinate with community partners to build resources
  • Improve professional competence through professional development, both district and state trainings
  • Attend varied school and district meetings to define and outline roles to improve participation, performance, and success for individual students and families.
  • Regular work attendance is required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Basic skill requirements include:

  • Ability to carry out the Check and Connect program for diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Proficient knowledge of classroom policies and procedures.
  • Strong people skills and affinity for children.
  • Excellent observation and analytical skills
  • Available to work flexible hours to have meetings with parents and provide support to students
  • Knowledge of prevention principles and risk and protective factors
  • Maintain confidentiality when working with students, families, school personnel and community members
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with multiple school teams
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Remain flexible with changes in assignments and situations
  • Meet deadlines and schedules; set priorities; being attentive to detail; and working with detailed information/data.
  • Remain calm in a crisis situation
  • Work independently with minimal supervision
  • Exercise good judgment and maintain confidentiality
  • Comply with school board policies and follow administrative procedures

Basic physical requirements include:

  • Possess the physical, mental, and emotional stability to work under stressful conditions, including but not limited to deadlines, contract requirements, inspection requirements, and interaction with critical personnel.
  • Perform moderate to extensive physical activity, including frequent standing and walking
  • Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds
  • Must be able to utilize quick body movements to maintain safety and implement student behavior plans
  • Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: safety practices and procedures; and health standards and hazards.
  • Willing to participate in and utilize de-escalation techniques, other behavior and MANDT training as needed.
