Bechtel is the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) partner on the Northrop Grumman team to deliver the Sentinel Program, modernizing the ground-based leg of the U.S. nuclear deterrent triad, including ICBM systems and launch infrastructure. Bechtel's scope in Sentinel's current Engineering & Manufacturing Development phase focuses on the ground infrastructure component of the program. The Safety Specialist helps develop and execute the safety and occupational health component of an Environmental, Safety, and Health (ES&H) program. This involves administrative and field tasks per established industry practices, procedures, and regulatory and Bechtel requirements. The position requires practical application of occupational safety and related disciplines for managing safety and health aspects of a project or facility. The position reports to the ES&H Supervisor on site and provides technical assistance to ES&H teammates, construction supervision, subcontractor personnel, field engineers, and client personnel.

• Executes assignments involving safety and health issues and risks, using judgment and experience to reduce potential adverse impacts.
• Integrates safety, health, and environmental requirements into planning documents, construction, commissioning and startup, operations, schedules, procurement, and subcontract documents.
• Interprets requirements and provides technical assistance within ES&H teams and project groups regarding risk and hazard assessment, plan preparation, and ES&H program execution.
• Researches issues, regulatory requirements, performs safety studies, risk assessments, and prepares documentation and reports.
• Helps implement the project Safety and Health Management Plan, associated plans and procedures, and training program.
• Helps establish emergency preparedness and performs incident investigations.
• Conducts inspections and monitoring to evaluate ES&H performance, identify corrective actions, and confirm compliance with contract, regulatory, project, and Bechtel requirements.
• Develops safety and health communication through publications, flyers, posters, signs, banners, and other media.
• Analyzes data, tracks ES&H performance and trends, and prepares technical reports.
• Supports other ES&H team members and tasks across all ES&H disciplines.
• Knowledge of safety and health laws and regulations and applicable agencies' permitting processes and responsibilities. Knowledge of engineering, construction, and subcontract work processes.
• Knowledge of OSHA regulations and requirements.

• Requires a Bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) related to occupational safety or health and 2-5 years of relevant experience or 6-9 years of relevant work experience.

• Bachelor of Science Degree in safety, construction, industrial hygiene, life sciences, physical sciences, engineering or related field from an accredited college or university and at least 2 years of relevant experience; or, in lieu of degree, 5 years of progressive professional experience.
• Skilled in oral and written communication and knowledge of computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Experience in safety compliance inspection/assessment during construction.
• This is a field position approximately 80%: candidate must be able to walk on rocky and uneven surfaces, remain standing for long periods, wear protective gear (respirators, fall protection harness, boots, gloves), climb ladders up to 30 ft, and lift/carry loads up to 40 lbs.
• Preferred:
• 30-hour OSHA certification
• Five years of consecutive experience in construction safety
• Third-party certification in confined space safety; work at heights/fall protection; hazardous materials/IH or other ES&H specialty
• First aid/AED training and certification
• Bilingual - English/Spanish
