Bechtel is the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) partner on the Northrop Grumman team to deliver the Sentinel Program, which is modernizing the ground-based leg of the U.S. nuclear deterrent triad, including intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) systems and launch infrastructure. Bechtel’s scope of service in Sentinel’s current Engineering & Manufacturing Development phase focuses on the ground infrastructure component of the program.

Job Summary

The Safety Specialist helps develop and execute the safety and occupational health component of an Environmental, Safety, and Health (ES&H) program. This involves administrative and field tasks per established industry practices, procedures, and regulatory and Bechtel requirements. The position requires practical application of occupational safety and related disciplines for managing safety and health aspects of a project or facility. The position reports to the ES&H Supervisor on site.

Provides technical assistance to other Safety Services Specialists, construction supervision, subcontractor personnel, field engineers, and client personnel.

Major Responsibilities
  • Executes assignments involving safety and health issues and risks, using judgment and experience in the application of techniques and plans to reduce the potential for adverse impacts.
  • Integrates safety, health, and environmental requirements into planning documents, construction, commissioning and startup, operations, schedules, procurement, and subcontract documents.
  • Interprets requirements and provides technical assistance within ES&H teams and to project groups regarding risk and hazard assessment, plan preparation, and ES&H program execution.
  • Researches issues, regulatory requirements, performs safety studies, risk assessments, and prepares documentation and reports.
  • Helps implement the project Safety and Health Management Plan, associated plans and procedures, and training program.
  • Helps establish emergency preparedness and performs incident investigations.
  • Conducts inspections and monitoring to evaluate ES&H performance, identify corrective actions, and confirm compliance with contract, regulatory, project, and Bechtel requirements.
  • Develops safety and health communication through publications, flyers, posters, signs, banners, and other communication media.
  • Analyzes data, tracks ES&H performance and trends, and prepares technical reports.
  • Supports other ES&H team members and tasks associated with all three ES&H disciplines.
  • Knowledge of safety and health laws and regulations and applicable agencies’ permitting processes and responsibilities. Knowledge of engineering, construction, and subcontract work processes.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and requirements.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree (or international equivalent) related to occupational safety or health and 2-5 years of relevant experience or 6-9 years of relevant work experience
Required Knowledge and Skills
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in safety, construction, industrial hygiene, life sciences, physical sciences, engineering or other related field from an accredited college or university and at least 2 years of relevant experience; or, in lieu of degree, 5 years of progressive professional experience.
  • Skilled in oral and written communication and knowledge of computer applications (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Experience in safety compliance inspection/assessment during construction.
