Bechtel is the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) partner on the Northrop Grumman team to deliver the Sentinel Program, which modernizes the ground‑based leg of the U.S. nuclear deterrent triad, including intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) systems and launch infrastructure.
Job SummaryIn this role as Senior Structural Engineer, you will support the structural design for the project. This will entail originating/checking complex structural calculations, specifications, material requisitions, and technical studies or reports. Additionally, you will check design drawings, review and coordinate vendor information, lead technical discussions, and conduct constructability reviews.
Major Responsibilities- Designs structures using advanced knowledge of structural analysis, including statics, dynamics, and materials engineering
- Determines the appropriate use of various structural elements such as steel, wood, masonry, and concrete to ensure appropriate material is used based on load or stress requirements
- Originates and checks complex structural engineering deliverables, such as steel and concrete calculations, specifications, and material requisitions
- Prepares or assists in the preparation of cost estimates, quantity take‑offs for proposals, forecasts, and change orders
- Prepares or assists in preparation of conceptual studies, designs, reports, or proposals
- Plans, coordinates, or prepares equipment, work and material specifications, bid evaluations and award recommendations
- Coordinates structural engineering efforts in assigned areas with specialty groups, engineering disciplines, the client, vendor, contractors, construction, and other functional groups
- Prepares procurement and subcontract requisition documents and performs associated technical bid evaluations with award recommendations
- Provides technical assistance to other structural personnel and interacts with project functions, the customer, and regulatory agency personnel in the resolution of complex regulatory issues
- Provides assistance to project and construction management in identifying and complying with project structural requirements and in addressing issues as they arise during project execution
- Mentors and assists more junior structural team members
- Requires a bachelor’s degree in Structural/Civil Engineering (or international equivalent) and 5‑8 years of relevant experience or 9‑12 years of relevant work experience.
- Must be able to complete and pass a pre‑employment drug screen and background check.
- Prior engineering team leadership experience, including supervision of others
- Ability to independently execute the detailed design of complex steel and/or concrete structures
- Thorough knowledge and application of the AISC Steel Construction Manual, ACI 318, IBC and ASCE 7
- Proficient in the use of structural analysis software such as GTSTRUDL or STAAD.Pro
- Thorough knowledge of engineering deliverables, such as drawings, specifications, and material requisitions and of construction methods for concrete and steel structures
- Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written)
- Understands work processes of other disciplines and departments on projects.
- Ability to express technical issues in a clear and concise manner, both written and verbally
- Ability to resolve design issues with subordinates, suppliers, other engineering disciplines, construction, and the client.
- Proficient in the use of Mathcad or similar software
- Experience with procurement automation tools
- Design experience with Unified Facilities Criteria and the Whole Building Design Guide
- Intermediate knowledge of developing CSI Master format specifications, or Specs Intact
- Thorough knowledge of the provisions of ACI 349, ASCE 4‑98 standards
- Registered Professional Engineer in the USA (Civil or Structural Engineering)
- Possess active security clearance
- Prior experience working with government agencies, preferably the Department of Defense
