Senior Electrical Designer

Job Summary

In this role, you will plan, develop, and review electrical engineering design work, produce drawings and documentation, and prepare design estimates for a project. You will coordinate with clients, facilitate technical discussions, and review key electrical drawings, calculations, and bid summaries. You will solve complex technical issues and ensure electrical designs comply with all regulations and standards. This position is for a Smart Plant 3D Designer who will prepare electrical 3D designs as well as 2D electrical AutoCAD and Smart Sketch designs to support new facility infrastructure design for DOD and USAF projects.

Bechtel is the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) partner on the Northrop Grumman team to deliver the Sentinel Program, which is modernizing the ground‑based leg of the U.S. nuclear deterrent triad. The current scope focuses on the ground infrastructure component of the program.

• Support design development of electrical systems and equipment for the Sentinel project by preparing models, drawings, and evaluations in accordance with applicable procedures, codes, standards, and contract requirements.
• Support, coach, and train less experienced designers.
• Model electrical rooms, equipment, cable tray, conduit, conduit duct bank, lighting, receptacles, etc. in a Smart Plant 3D model environment.
• Create bill of materials and drawing installation details using Smart Sketch and AutoCAD, including grounding, lightning protection, and support details.
• Perform calculations utilizing AGI 32 for lighting layouts and ETAP for ground grid layouts.
• Coordinate 3D model activities, reconciling input and interference with other physical disciplines.
• Produce drawings of interior and exterior layouts/plans/elevation views of the raceway design (conduit/cable tray/duct bank), equipment location, lighting layouts, lightning protection layouts, and grounding plans.
• Develop material specifications utilizing the software Specs Intact.
• Coordinate with systems engineering to establish and verify design/project requirements.
• Ensure electrical systems designs comply with all applicable installation codes, regulations, and standards.
• Lead or administer work of electrical designers and drafters for a business line technology, including preparation of layouts, study drawings, detailed CAD design models and construction drawings.
• Assist in constructing detailed scale models and prepare material requisitions and bid evaluations.
• Monitor and check work for compliance with approved electrical design standards; participate in constructability reviews; prepare design and drafting procedures to standardize design effort.
• Coordinate or make jobsite visits as required to resolve problems and interpret drawings and documents.
• Review electrical design scope changes as required for project management.

• AA/AS or Certificate in Engineering/CAD with 7–8 years of experience, or 9–12 years of relevant work experience.
• United States citizen.
• Must be able to complete and pass pre‑employment drug screen and background check.

• Knowledge and application of NEC code and NEMA/ANSI/IEEE Standards.
• Experience with electronic cable management systems such as SETROUTE.
• Collaboration with other disciplines, ability to cope with conflicting deadlines, frequent interruptions, and multiple tasks.
• Relevant experience in drawings for electrical systems and equipment on nuclear or industrial process facilities, data centers, utility plants, or complex building systems.
• Hands‑on and advanced experience using Smartplant 3D, Smart Sketch, and AutoCAD.
• Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
• Ability to utilize engineering and office automation tools.
• Broad knowledge of electrical engineering design principles, schematics, and layouts.
• Knowledge of Bechtel Corporate guides and standards.
• Thorough knowledge of engineering deliverables such as drawings and specifications.
