Position Overview

The Vascular / Arterial Procedure Scrub Technician supports safe, efficient, and sterile endovascular and vascular surgical procedures by functioning as the sterile scrub person. This role prepares procedure rooms, opens and organizes supplies, maintains sterile technique, anticipates provider needs, assists with catheter/guidewire/device exchanges, supports hemostasis and closure workflows, and ensures accurate handling of specimens and supplies throughout the case. The Scrub Tech collaborates closely with physicians, RNs, radiology/cath technologists, anesthesia, and support staff to optimize patient safety, procedural flow, and quality outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepares procedure room and sterile field for vascular/endovascular cases
  • Verifies equipment readiness and confirms supplies/devices are available and not expired
  • Assists with patient prep/positioning and participates in time-out and safety checks (per policy)
  • Maintains strict sterile technique throughout the procedure and addresses any breaks in sterility
  • Anticipates provider needs and passes sterile instruments and devices (wires, catheters, sheaths, balloons, stents, closure supplies, etc., as applicable)
  • Manages sterile flushes/tubing and keeps the sterile field organized
  • Supports device preparation and exchanges while preventing contamination or damage
  • Assists with specimen handling when needed (labeling/transfer per policy)
  • Supports hemostasis and closure workflows within competency and facility guidelines
  • Breaks down sterile field, maintains sharps safety, cleans/restocks room, and reports supply/equipment issues to support efficient turnover
Requirements & Qualifications

Required:

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program or documented equivalent training/experience per facility and state requirements.

Current BLS (Basic Life Support) required.

Minimum 1 year scrub experience in one of the following (depending on facility needs):

Cath lab, IR, vascular surgery, endovascular suite, hybrid OR, office-based lab.

Preferred:

CST (Certified Surgical Technologist) or equivalent credential (if applicable).

Prior experience scrubbing endovascular/peripheral vascular cases.

Familiarity with vascular devices: wires, sheaths, balloons, stents, atherectomy, thrombectomy, and closure systems.

ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) (facility dependent).

Experience with ultrasound-guided access workflows (support role).
