The Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator is an integral member of the Student Health, Advocacy, and Wellness team. This position oversees the planning, implementation and evaluation of comprehensive theory-and evidence-based Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug (ATOD) prevention programming for WSU students and the campus community.
Key responsibilities include:
- - Ensure programming addresses the primary (universal), secondary, and tertiary tiers of prevention.
- - Analyze campus and community data to inform prevention strategies. Define evaluation metrics, collect program data, and maintain accurate documentation to drive continuous improvement.
- - Oversee the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP) program:
- - Conduct one-on-one meetings with students who have been found in violation of campus drug and alcohol policies.
- - Maintain communication with the Dean of Students' office, Housing and Residence Life, WSU Police, WSU Athletics, and other key campus stakeholders to facilitate referrals, compliance and case management.
- - Ensure ASAP program materials remain up to date with current research.
- - Serve as the primary liaison with vendor of case management platform.
- - Assist with campus compliance efforts associated with the Drug Free Schools and Campuses Act (DFSCA), which includes the preparation of a biennial compliance report and annual campus notification letter. Assist the WSU Police Department to ensure compliance with the Clery Act, as it intersects with the DFSCA.
- - Collaboratively engage peer educators in substance abuse prevention initiatives. Provide annual training to peer educators and support them in the ongoing development of programming and communication strategies.
- - Create effective and accurate communication materials in a variety of formats, including print and social media. Work with the SAS marketing team to ensure alignment with division and university standards.
- - Provide trainings and/or presentations to various campus groups, such as Resident Assistants (RAs), Fraternity/Sorority Life, Athletics, Faculty/Staff groups, in-class presentations, etc.
- - Contribute to broader campus-wide wellbeing and prevention initiatives. This position may also contribute to broader efforts at the division and university level, as needed and assigned.
- - Collaboration with key stakeholders, on and off campus, is required for effective performance in all aspects of this role.
Required:
- - Bachelor's degree in Health Promotion/Health Education, Public Health, or a closely related field.
- - Computer skills, including experience with things such as word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation applications.
Preferred:
- - Certified Community Health Education Specialist (CHES), other relevant professional certifications, or ability to obtain within the first year of hire.
- - Experience in a prevention-centered role.
- - Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
- - Thorough knowledge of health education/prevention theory, research, and assessment; planning, implementation, and evaluation of prevention programs.
- - Effective presentation skills, especially with respect to varied populations and learning styles.
- - Coursework in Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs.
- - Experience with social media and other multimedia platforms.
- - Experience providing health education or health promotion programs/services in a higher education setting.
- - Familiarity with professional industry standards, including the American College Health Association (ACHA) Standards of Practice for Health Promotion in Higher Education (SPHPHE), and the College AIM Matrix
- - Active membership in relevant local, state, and national professional associations.
- - Familiarity with qualitative and quantitative research, assessment, and data analysis methods.
