Overview

The Field Subject-Matter Expert & Trainer brings deep, hands‑on field experience to Sure Steel’s Learning & Development team. Having worked as a foreman and a superintendent, this person carries instant credibility with the crews — someone who speaks their language — and uses that credibility to train, mentor, and develop field leaders directly on the job site.

Unlike a classroom‑based role, this position goes to where the work happens. Field leaders often can’t pull their people off‑site for training; this role solves that by embedding on job sites — for example, multi‑day on‑site stints alongside a superintendent or construction manager — to deliver training in person, answer real‑world questions, and coach in the moment.

This role partners closely with the L&D team and the Field Employee Development Coach, serving as the subject‑matter authority who ensures training content is accurate, practical, and grounded in how the work is really done. This role will continue to evolve as the L&D department grows.

Key Responsibilities On‑Site Training & Mentoring
  • Embed on job sites to deliver construction manager and foreman training in person.
  • Conduct multi‑day on‑site coaching stints alongside superintendents and construction managers.
  • Mentor field leaders one‑on‑one in their own environment, answering real‑time questions and concerns.
  • Meet crews where they are rather than requiring them to come off‑site for training.
Subject‑Matter Expertise
  • Serve as the field SME for L&D, validating that training content is accurate and field‑relevant.
  • Translate L&D content into the language and day‑to‑day realities of the trades.
  • Advise the L&D team on field workflows, work sequencing, and field best practices.
Field Leader Development
  • Support superintendents, construction managers, and foremen in developing their people.
  • Reinforce safety practices, quality standards, and company processes in the field.
  • Identify skill gaps and development needs among field leaders and surface them to L&D.
Collaboration with L&D
  • Partner with the Field Employee Development Coach and the L&D team to deliver a complete training experience.
  • Provide feedback and field insights to improve L&D programs and content.
  • Help carry implementation forward so training momentum is built and sustained.
Required Skills & Attributes
  • Deep credibility and rapport with trades crews; able to speak their language and earn their trust quickly.
  • Strong mentoring and on‑site coaching ability.
  • Clear communicator who can explain the “why” behind processes, standards, and safety.
  • Strong commitment to jobsite safety and leading by example.
  • Adaptable across job sites, teams, and field conditions.
  • Willingness to travel and embed on‑site for multi‑day stretches.
Qualifications
  • Extensive hands‑on field experience as both a foreman and a superintendent (steel erection / structural steel / heavy construction) (required).
  • Deep working knowledge of field operations, work sequencing, and jobsite safety.
  • Prior mentoring, training, or lead‑man experience (preferred).
  • Familiarity with the systems and tools field crews use (preferred).
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus, depending on crew makeup.
Compensation

As defined by offer letter.

Why this Role Matters
  • Bringing credible, experienced field leadership directly to the crews.
  • Solving the “I can’t bring my guys to you” barrier to training.
  • Ensuring L&D content is accurate and grounded in real field practice.
  • Developing the next generation of foremen and superintendents.
  • Strengthening safety culture and field performance through hands‑on coaching.
