Library Assistant Specialist – Felicity Branch (Full-time)
We are looking for an enthusiastic and service-oriented individual to join our team. The Library Assistant Specialist provides excellent service to people of all ages and performs library service tasks including circulation of materials, answering reference and reader’s advisory questions, providing technology assistance, and assisting guests at the service desk.
Responsibilities- Demonstrates welcoming behaviors and C.C.P.L. internal service standards to encourage approachability and effective interactions with vendors, guests, and staff at all levels.
- Interprets library policies and procedures in a guest‑responsive manner and reports unresolved problems to the Branch Manager or Person‑in‑Charge.
- Maintains a working knowledge of library materials, services, and programs and promotes them to people of all ages.
- Answers library guest reference questions in person and on the telephone using books, audio/visual materials, databases, periodicals, etc., including the online catalog and the internet.
- Provides reader’s advisory services and bibliographic instruction for library guests of all ages.
- Participates in marketing the collection and library services; promotes library programs and services.
- Conducts training for the public in the use of computers and other electronic resources and assists guests in using the online catalog, computers, internet, printer, self‑check‑out stations, and copiers.
- Uses library circulation system to assist guests at the desk, including checking materials in and out, processing holds, registering borrowers, explaining overdue policies and procedures, and collecting fines and fees accurately.
- Assists in opening and closing duties by counting money, using financial functions to print and balance the cash sheet, emptying material drops, preparing materials for the shuttle, and ensuring the proper appearance of the branch.
- Maintains knowledge of the Dewey Decimal Classification system to sort and shelve materials; assists in collection maintenance, including processing donations as assigned.
- Performs general clerical duties such as maintaining branch files, recording monthly engagement statistics, processing vendor reports, and ordering office and hygiene supplies within budget.
- Monitors branch safety and facility conditions, notifies manager or administration as issues occur, and completes facility reports.
- Produces regular and predictable physical attendance.
- High school diploma; two years of relevant experience preferred.
- Skilled in using computers and software applications, including Microsoft Office products, and troubleshooting equipment issues; familiar with electronic resources for reference, reader’s advisory assistance, programming, statistical reports, and communication.
- Must be able to work evenings and weekends.
- Establishes and maintains excellent relationships with library staff, guests, volunteers, and work groups, respecting diversity and all ages.
- Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills when providing service to people of all ages and abilities; knows and explains available library services, policies, and procedures.
- Demonstrates courtesy and tact; maintains composure, demonstrates diplomacy and confidentiality while addressing public issues, including complaint resolution.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills in a variety of formats; uses communication tools to stay informed of policy and procedural changes and communicates with manager daily.
- Possesses knowledge of current and classic library materials for all ages.
- Operates office equipment such as printers, telephones, copiers, faxing and scanning; performs minor maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Analyzes reference questions and supplies suitable information; refers difficult questions to appropriate staff as needed.
- Demonstrates independent judgment, organizational skills, and attention to detail; works without direct supervision, manages multiple priorities, and concentrates amid frequent interruptions.
