Plain City, Ohio Salary: $90K - $130K (Open to Negotiation) Position Overview We are seeking an experienced Estimator to develop accurate, competitive cost estimates for heavy civil and heavy highway projects. The Estimator will perform detailed quantity takeoffs, analyze contract documents and specifications, prepare bid proposals, and collaborate with project managers and subcontractors to support successful pre-bid and post-award activities. This role requires a strong background in heavy civil construction estimating, familiarity with industry estimating and scheduling software, and the ability to interpret complex site-civil drawings and technical specifications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed quantity takeoffs from plans, specifications, and geotechnical reports using CAD, Civil 3D, and digital plan review tools.
  • Use HCSS Heavy Bid (and similar estimating platforms) to build assemblies, unit costs, and bid spreadsheets; ensure accuracy of cost inputs and unit rates.
  • Review contracts, specifications, and addenda to identify scope, exclusions, risk, and contract requirements; provide clarifications and exceptions as necessary.
  • Coordinate with project managers, schedulers, suppliers, and subcontractors to solicit quotes, verify pricing, and validate constructability and schedule assumptions.
  • Develop labor, equipment, and materials cost estimates; prepare cost reporting and backup documentation for client negotiations and internal review.
  • Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits, conduct field quantity verification and surveying coordination when needed, and incorporate site conditions into estimates.
  • Prepare bid submissions, proposals, and value engineering recommendations; support post-bid clarifications and contract award transitions to operations.
  • Maintain and update historical cost databases, unit cost libraries, and Heavy Job/Heavy Bid project records to support continuous estimating improvement.
  • Provide input to project schedules, risk registers, and change order pricing; collaborate on project closeout cost reconciliation.
  • Mentor junior estimators and work across departments to improve estimating processes, documentation, and cost-control measures.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field, or equivalent experience in heavy civil estimating.
  • 3+ years of progressive estimating experience in heavy civil/heavy highway construction with proven bid success.
  • Proficiency with HCSS Heavy Bid and Heavy Job (or equivalent heavy civil estimating and field tracking software).
  • Strong skills in Bluebeam for plan markup and digital takeoffs; experience with AutoCAD and Civil 3D for interpreting and extracting quantities from drawings.
  • Proven ability to perform detailed quantity takeoffs, cost calculations, and prepare competitive bids and cost reports.
  • Familiarity with surveying principles and ability to coordinate field verification with survey teams.
  • Experience with scheduling concepts and tools; ability to collaborate with schedulers to align estimate assumptions with project timelines.
