Juvenile Detention Educational Program Teacher/Tutor
Reports to:
Supervisor/Supt. Designee
Salary Range: $44,430 - $64,045 (Dependent on experience and education)

Full‑Time, 183 days, summer supplemental may be offered
FLSA Status:
Exempt
Under supervision, provides individualized and small‑group academic instruction to youth in a juvenile detention setting through both in‑person and virtual (hybrid) learning environments. The tutor supports student progress toward academic goals, assists in credit recovery, reinforces core subject skills, and collaborates with educational staff to implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and Individualized Success Plans.
Qualifications- Bachelor's Degree required; degree in Education or related field preferred
- Valid Ohio Teaching License or ability to obtain appropriate licensure preferred
- Experience working with at‑risk youth, behavioral needs, or juvenile justice populations preferred
- Knowledge of core academic subject areas (ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies)
- Experience supporting IEP implementation and data collection
- Trained in CPI/Non‑Violent Crisis Prevention (or willingness to be trained)
- Ability to deliver instruction in both in‑person and virtual formats
- Strong classroom management and relationship‑building skills
- Excellent attendance record and punctuality
- Provides direct academic tutoring in core content areas aligned to Ohio Academic Standards
- Delivers instruction in both secure, in‑person detention classrooms and approved virtual platforms as needed
- Supports students in completing assignments, credit recovery, and preparation for assessments
- Assists in implementing IEP accommodations, modifications, and behavioral supports
- Collects and documents student progress data to support educational planning
- Collaborates with teachers, intervention specialists, therapists, and detention staff to ensure continuity of instruction
- Maintains a structured, supportive, and trauma‑informed learning environment
- Uses de‑escalation strategies and follows all facility behavior management protocols
- Communicates student progress with educational staff and administration
- Adapts instructional strategies to meet diverse learning needs and varying lengths of student stay
- Participates in staff meetings, professional development, and required training
- Maintains confidentiality in accordance with FERPA and facility regulations
- Demonstrates professionalism, flexibility, and cultural responsiveness
- Collects necessary program paperwork as needed
- Provides hands‑on learning activities that supplement lessons both online and in‑person
- Delivers Physical Education activities as prescribed
