Moderate/Intensive Intervention Specialist

Reports To: Building Principal or as directed by the AMESC Superintendent
The Athens-Meigs Educational Service Center (AMESC) is seeking a qualified applicant for a Moderate/Intensive Intervention Specialist position for the School Year. This school-age classroom position will be located at Carleton School in Syracuse, Ohio.
The Mission of the Athens-Meigs Educational Service Center is to work in partnership with the community to improve student achievement, build capacity, and raise expectations for all individuals in our service region.
Position OverviewThe position involves working with students who have significant cognitive and/or developmental delays. The ideal candidate will provide high-quality, individualized education and behavioral support to students with a variety of needs. This position requires patience, creativity, and a commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment for all students.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) for students with significant cognitive delays and/or developmental disabilities.
- Provide direct instruction in academic, social, and life skills areas tailored to the needs of each student.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team (e.g., speech therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists) to meet the diverse needs of students.
- Implement positive behavioral supports and evidence-based interventions for students with challenging behaviors.
- Collect and maintain data to monitor student progress and adapt instructional strategies as necessary.
- Utilize adaptive equipment, technology, and other resources to facilitate learning and skill development.
- Establish a classroom environment that promotes respect, independence, and emotional growth.
- Communicate effectively with parents, caregivers, and other professionals to support student success both at school and home.
- Foster a culture of inclusion, promoting social skills and appropriate behavior.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Special Education or related field is preferred.
- Valid Ohio Intervention Specialist license or equivalent, or be eligible to obtain an Intervention Specialist license.
- Experience working with students with cognitive and developmental delays preferred.
- Strong understanding of positive behavior interventions and strategies for managing challenging behaviors.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to maintain professionalism and empathy in high-stress situations.
- Familiarity with assistive technology, adaptive learning tools, and classroom accommodations.
- Experience working with students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Down syndrome, or other developmental disabilities.
- CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) or similar training in de-escalation techniques.
- Knowledge of alternative communication methods such as AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication).
- Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
