Central State University invites applications for a tenure‑track Assistant Professor of Reading in the Department of Professional Education and Music. This faculty member will teach literacy and reading methods courses for teacher candidates in programs leading to Ohio teacher licensure. The successful candidate will demonstrate deep expertise in the Science of Reading, structured literacy, and evidence‑based instructional practices aligned with Ohio’s dyslexia support laws and statewide literacy initiatives.
This position requires excellence in teaching, active scholarly engagement, and meaningful service to the department, college, and university. The faculty member will contribute to accreditation, curriculum development, and continuous improvement efforts consistent with Ohio Department of Higher Education and Carnegie Mellon Office of Education standards.
- Teach undergraduate and graduate literacy courses, including Foundations of Reading, Reading Diagnosis and Intervention, and Literacy Methods.
- Supervise field experiences and support clinical practice placements.
- Maintain regular office hours and provide academic advising.
- Use culturally responsive, evidence‑based instructional practices.
- Lead and support curriculum development aligned with Ohio Learning Standards, dyslexia laws, and Science of Reading frameworks.
- Participate in assessment of student learning outcomes and program effectiveness.
- Contribute to accreditation reporting and continuous improvement processes.
- Maintain an active research agenda in reading/literacy education or related fields.
- Publish in peer‑reviewed journals and present at conferences.
- Seek external funding when appropriate.
- Serve on departmental, college, and university committees.
- Participate in school‑university partnerships and community literacy initiatives.
- Contribute to program governance and strategic planning.
- Doctorate in Reading/Literacy Education, Curriculum & Instruction (Literacy focus), or related field.
- Demonstrated expertise in the Science of Reading, including structured literacy.
- Knowledge of Ohio literacy mandates and dyslexia requirements.
- Evidence of successful P‑12 or higher education teaching experience.
- Emerging record of scholarly activity.
- Commitment to preparing educators to teach diverse learners.
- Experience teaching or supervising teacher candidates.
- Experience with CAEP accreditation and program assessment.
- Knowledge of OAE Reading Foundations and related assessments.
- Experience integrating technology into literacy instruction.
- Evidence of grant writing or participation in funded projects.
