Aide - Special Education

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or G.E.D.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality about students and any experiences associated with them.
  • Valid Ohio Department of Education Permit appropriate for the assignment.
  • Self-directed and able to learn required skills for the position.
  • Congenial disposition and strong diplomacy skills.

Reports To:

Building Principal

Essential Job Functions:

  • Offers instructional support for teachers. Works with small groups and/or individual students. Seeks advice when expectations are unclear.
  • Helps students with remedial and/or enrichment activities. Reinforces instructional objectives introduced by the teacher. Maintains a positive learning environment.
  • Provides behavioral intervention support when needed. Avoids being intrusive. Solves student concerns discreetly.
  • Supports an inclusive educational environment. Helps students with disabilities participate in appropriate peer group activities as directed.
  • Collects data as directed.
  • Takes precautions to ensure staff/student safety. Does not leave students unsupervised.
  • Maintains high standards and upholds the student conduct code.
  • Works with the classroom teacher to address persistent behavior problems and provide positive behavioral support.
  • Supervises non-classroom activities as directed (e.g., arrival/departure, lunch, recess, field trips, library, computer lab, etc.).
  • Promotes the proper use and care of school property. Reports student discipline problems, vandalism, and other related concerns.
  • Reports evidence of suspected child abuse and neglect as required by law.
  • Performs clerical work related to classroom activities. Prepares and distributes classroom materials. Maintains records as directed.
  • Prepares classroom equipment for use.
  • Helps keep program and storage areas orderly.
  • Participates in parent conferences, open houses, and other required events as requested.
  • Participates in district staff meetings and professional growth opportunities as requested.
  • Strives to develop rapport and serves as a positive role model for others.
  • Perform other specific job-related duties as directed.

    • Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue.
    • Occasional interaction among unruly children.
    • Many situations that require hand motion, e.g. computer keyboard, typing, writing.
    • Consistent requirements to sit, stand, walk, hear, see, read, speak, reach, stretch with hands and arms, crouch, kneel, climb, and stoop.
    • May require working under time constraints to meet deadlines.
